Road Town needs a community centre — Vanterpool
Fourth District Representative Mark Vanterpool has made calls for the BVI‘s capital, Road Town, to have its own community centre.
Vanterpool, who is also the former Works Minister in the previous National Democratic Party (NDP) government, said prior efforts to have this done had proven unsuccessful.
According to Vanterpool, whose constituency includes Road Town, building plans had been drawn up as far back as 2002. He said the proposed centre was to be developed in the Long Bush area near the Elmore Stoutt High School.
Vanterpool said the building can possibly be used by the school during the day and by the surrounding community during the evening.
“We had planned evening classes, computer classes for that building. The building was designed, it was ready to go. But like I said, when political cycles change, those developments change,” Vanterpool stated.
While noting that the building plans are still at the Works Ministry, Vanterpool reiterated that a community centre would serve the people in that area, which he described as very densely populated.
“There is a need for a community centre in town. When I used to say that Road Town doesn’t have a community centre, people didn’t understand,” Vanterpool stated.
He said neither Multipurpose Sports Complex nor the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall Cultural Centre can serve the purpose of a community centre for the city.
“It needs a community centre in the Fourth District in the city to be able to have meetings, to be able to congregate … those other areas [mentioned above] are used for other purposes,” Vanterpool stated.
The legislator said he did not expect the development of a centre to happen overnight but expressed hopes that the government would plan for it and work towards the initiative.

A community centre for what again? We have the dilapidated cultural centre and the sports complex and the 2 ball fields and the pier park and the admin complex and the govt house. Whats the difference with a community centre??? Please. Stop. Yet another reason why NDP canNOt get back in power on the near future. No sense. No direction. Just spendthrifts and vax mandate people.
We dont need to waste more money in a struggling global economy when we need need better and more schools and low income housing and to develop food sustainability. Is this man thinking?
Does not sound like a man not seeking re-election
We need a community centre for what….Purcell Estaste have 1
Cane Garden Bay have 1..
East End have 1…
Brewers Bay Have 1..
What meaningful progamme are been run in these centres…
WE NEED A RECREATIONAL CENTRE
We do not, do not need any dan community center. Ww need Jobs damit.
Another job for his cronies to be given a contract to build and maintain the community center.
Why do we need another community center? There a so many churches in District 4 that has church halls. Give them a subsidy to host all the programs you wish to do. Get the churches/businesses involved. Think outside the box. The Briercliff hall sites as an eyesore in the heart of Road Town. Take your energy in getting that building fix.
Road town need a new representative who will show up to work on a daily basis and who wont turn their back on its constituents
Not the goose on the Luce who has done nothing for these islands either….
Hon. Mark, with all the millions you were that disappear during your NDP administration period. Can you find some or ask those who went with the millions to make a contribution back to your district where the pier park is located to put down your community center?
You are doing quite well in the private sector. Can’t you make that contribution with all the years you had in office to at least give back to the community with that?
Come on MAN!
Can’t Althea Scatliffe serve that same purpose?
Is she still alive and able?
We need a proper high school first.
Decorating government buildings, and focusing on non-essential works. Start with the schools before anything else please.
Why NDP didn’t do it!!! Politics in Tortola is redic!! All these politicians shitty!!!!
All representative in the BVI can only think of simple things to do for the community. All of them without exception wants a community center. They cannot think of anything else that can help the community. So hurry up and build the center so that the next Representative do not have anything to ask for.
No substance. Wishy washy, every last one.
We want Kishma who lives in road town
Fix the schools first.
When you in power we didn’t have 1 now you trying a thing ,have a free advice for you collect all the overspending $ on the projects and build it .
Fix the school, and that’s what the cultural center was for, but so long now and it can’t even get fix. I actually liked going there as a kid for different events.
The Community Center is what we need!?
I don’t think this guy been out of his suit and out in the fresh air for a bit.
How about a school? Maybe a hospital on a Sister Island with staff that lives on that Island?? A dump that doesn’t spew toxic fumes from the million water bottles we burn every month???
A Community Center and on every corner is a must have.
A school,not at all.
Suffer the children and their future and that of these VI.
What we need is a representative who takes action and does thing in the district for the people and not his pockets. Why wsit 4 yrs to fix childrens parks when other districts did so long ago. No community projects of good will, neighborhood roads full of potholes and hillside roads dangerously overgrown with foliage making hard to see. Impossible to believe 4th district is the Capital of the country.
