RVIPF makes progress in Long Bush murder, Pier Park robbery probes

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has announced significant progress in two high-profile cases.

Last Friday, January 19, the Major Incident Team of the RVIPF announced the arrest of a suspect in the ongoing investigation of the murder of 25-year-old Butu Mountain resident Azim Yonnas.

Reports indicate that Yonnas was pursued and fatally shot by two armed, masked individuals in the Long Bush area on September 3, 2023. Police said the arrest followed an extensive three-month-long investigation.

The RVIPF assured residents that exhaustive efforts were being made to collect all necessary evidence and ensure a comprehensive and fair legal process.

In a separate development, the RVIPF reported on January 20, that Vernon Bernard, 32, of Manuel Reef, was charged in connection with the armed robbery at the House of Luxury jewellery store at the Cyril B Romney Tortola Pier Park in July 2023.

Bernard faces charges of robbery, handling stolen goods, and possession of the proceeds of criminal conduct.

This charge is the latest in the ongoing efforts to solve the July 2023 heist, where two masked men dressed in white stole jewellery and fired shots while escaping. There were no reports of any injuries arising from the robbery. Two men were previously arrested in connection with the robbery.

The RVIPF said it remains dedicated to solving the case and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

These breakthroughs come amid rising concerns by residents and elected officials over the spate of serious crime within the community.

RVIPF Commissioner Mark Collins told lawmakers recently that he faced serious challenges with a significant deficit of officers in the Force.
