Rymer defends government’s international trips

Deputy Premier Kye Rymer

Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer recently defended the international trips being taken by members of the government, a matter that has drawn staunch criticism from several sections of the public.

While debating the Crown Lands Management Bill (2024) during the May 30 sitting of the House of Assembly, members of the Opposition mentioned the international trips Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley and members of his government have been taking, despite the numerous important actions that need to be taken in the country.

When Rymer stood to make his contribution to the debate, he said almost every member of the current House of Assembly has taken international trips that were covered by public funds.

“Almost every member of this House has travelled more than once since this House started — Opposition members and all. So when the Premier goes to SIDs and the Opposition leader goes to CPA, what’s the difference? It’s the same money being spent. I remember members talking about the money budgeted for travelling and it seems like it’s the government alone that’s travelling. Everybody’s travelling,” Rymer stated.

Rymer also cautioned elected leaders to be responsible when making statements in the House of Assembly, as the public is listening closely. But he said many elected leaders feel the need to speak boldly because they know House of Assembly sessions are broadcast to a wide audience.

It is quite normal for elected leaders to travel internationally to fulfil various duties. However, the BVI public has been calling for the government to reduce their international trips in order to cut spending amid the numerous issues that need funds in the community.

Despite the cries, government members continue to travel, using the rationale that the BVI needs physical representation when important decisions are being made at international events.

  1. Shameful says:

The ineptitude of Kye is now in full display. I listened to his last debate on the lands bill and I was genuinely embarrassed for him. All he did was suck up to the Premier and offered nothing to enrich the debate. Add this to his poor performance on the infrastructure and you see a minister who is underperforming to a great magnitude.

It is ok because they are using the hard working taxpayers money. Meanwhile, the hard working taxpayers is dropping in pot holes almost the size of a small studio apartment, can’t go home after work and enjoy a 10 minute shower due to the lack of Simple running water. I am tired of buying disposable plates, cups and plastic utensils. Ain’t that some S after paying for water that myself and lots of other people on the Island is paying for?

So according to Rymer it is not a problem the ministers are wasting money because the opposition is also wasting money.

The only thing on display when this guy opens his mouth is incompetence.

Can they for once not just not shut their mouths and get to work.

They defend, complain, are upset, jealous etc etc etc. In the meantime, they are not getting anything done.

It is not the time to defend your travels Rymer. It’s time to fix the bloody roads.

In case you were not aware, the floods are getting more frequent, we need a solution.

Yes business travel is essential. I would never deny that. And yes our elected leaders should be allowed to travel with ax certain level of comfort indicative of their rank and file. The problem is the frequency of travel and the amount of people forming each delegation! Where less than $2m was spent in 5 years of travel, this government will spend $5m this year alone! That is crazy!

A** go home you see ware u bill your house on who land real a**

  12. A Capitalist Who Loves the BVI says:

This is the same imb***le who was recently spouting off about bringing AI and crypto facilities here – both of which are industries that are power hogs. So here’s a Territory that cannot even deliver reliable electric power to the consumer complement of its populace, but he’s musing about activities that would take 4 to 7 times the amount of energy now being used (when it’s available). What an idiot.

  13. Ha, Ha, Haaaa says:

For real, rowboat frog face was better off not saying anything. Rowboat frog face is the Premier clean up lap dog. The Premier say jump, Kye ask how high you want me to jump.

  14. Dammmmm says:

If the politicians in the BVI, have to travel. Why the hell they can’t travel in business class and stay at a reasonable priced hotel with a food voucher. If they want to fly first class and stay at a luxury hotel, they should come out of their own pockets not the tax payers money that they are paying into the system. These Politicians use the taxpayers money like it is their personal ATM. I can’t stand Politicians, they are dirty and disgusting and I have no respect for any of them.

  15. Hush says:

Were you cautious while you were destroying others? Just hush.

  16. J says:

The same voters that complained for 4 years elected these guys to serve another 4. Why are we complaining when we do not welcome change?
