Second protest against direct UK rule planned for tomorrow

Just over a week after staging a protest against the Commission of Inquiry Report’s recommendation of direct United Kingdom rule over the BVI, protestors are expected to take to the streets again to let the Governor know they are still against the recommendations.

There is a planned protest for Wednesday at 4 pm which is being classified as the Second Demonstration Against Direct UK Rule.

Since the first protest, Governor John Rankin, United Kingdom Overseas Territory Minister Amanda Milling and Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley have engaged in several discussions on the COI recommendations and all three parties have expressed that those talks have been going well.

However, the organisers of the second protests, which BVI News understands to be spearheaded by Amberley Crabbe and Melissa Potter, have declared that the “recommendations are still on the table and our children’s future is at stake. The people of the Virgin Islands say ‘no UK rule”.

Our news centre tried to contact both women for a comment on the planned protest but, up until news time, there was no response.

Governor Rankin has noted no decision regarding implementation of the recommendations has been made by the United Kingdom, despite accepting Dr Wheatley’s proposal for a new National Unity Government.

The new government has seen former members of the Opposition and government members working together under one government to address structural incompetence in the government and public sector while also looking at different ways to implement the COI recommendations and preserving the territory’s democratic integrity.

Premier Wheatley has also said the new National Unity Government is working on a proposal that will be sent to Governor Rankin and Minister Milling in regards to ways in which the COI recommendations can be implemented without direct rule from the United Kingdom.

What I can’t understand is how come these people who want to protest were never organizing protests when the crime rate skyrocket after the hurricane and old and young were getting gunned down. So, you want to tell me that wasn’t worth protesting over???? Set a f@#$ing cu**$

Bingo! We need a full reset on the culture of politics in the territory. And while at it, reset the structure of government. An economy based on governmental largess… Sounds a bit like Russia.

This unity government acting like election just finish. Talking and no action. Start making moves to clean house if you are serious about turning things around!

Some just love the limelight yet have NO SOLUTIONS whatsoever!

They’ll never acknowledge it is us that allowed this to happen and if ‘they did’ it is because simply because of color.

We are the problem, and people such as the two organizing this rally come up with nothing but hate and vitriol.

Go protest, that is your right, but come with new and viable solutions with a clear understanding that you $hit in your own bed! No more shining your dim light into the darkness and laying blame on others that had NOTHING to do with these islands’ current set of disgraceful problems!

The people of the Virgin Islands say ‘no UK rule”. Really? Has there been a referendum? This small group of protestors do not speak for all Belongers and Residents!
And as for the National Unity Government – they have not been elected by the people. These are the same ministers that allowed the corruption all these years and were complicit. Can we trust them now?

Why don’t they march to the burning dump or to the poor schools that need to be rebuilt or along the roads that need to be rebuilt or to the ports to condemn the rampant drug trade or on the homes of the Hezbollah? We will get better but we need help today. Denial of this fact will not help with our recovery.

Amberly Crabbe and Melissa Potter does not speak for the majority of the people. They speak for the few chosen favorites who get the lion share of the multimillion dollar contracts from which they are beneficiaries. So of course they don’t speak for the masses who barely get the crumbs that fall from their well fed tables. They are desperate to keep the corruption going because it benefits them. The people who join these parasites in protest are blind and deaf to the inadequate representation for all people by this government. To the Craabbes and Pooters we don’t want the crumbs that fall from your tables. We want to be equals and share share equitably in this territory resources. No one person, or one family should be held in high esteem over the masses of the BVI population. So UK direct rule all the way to bring equity, transparency and dignity to the governing body of these Virgin Islands. These greedy people if they don’t get All, they are not happy. Well, the masses who don’t get anything at all “Are Not Happy”. So you corrupt greedy bastards can no longer rape us of our inheritance. Get a CONSCIENCE.

Maybe many of the important things in life are not related to our blackness, whiteness, yellowness or what ever?!
Maybe race is one small factor in what it means to be a human being!
Expecting people to be good because they are black or bad because they are white is simple minded and holding us all back from bettering ourselves as HUMANS!

  11. Goliath says:

Amberjey and Melissa are rude to them own and the Caribbean diaspora especially. Bvi is not made up of bvi born heres. Until them two understand say discrimination is not just against black and UK. Bvi has bigger social problems they need to face the room. They fight against then own and everyone who come here to live. You all don’t speak for me. Get from here. This just a March to continue yall disgraceful ways. All you behave like descendants from Caribs.

    • Not from here says:

If only we as island people/ not for here/ down island folks were treated better, and was accepted, and wasn’t forced and beaten down into silence, the Bvi would have had a march like no other, remember when Irma happened? Who mostly came to help rebuild? What did the local people do after they started to see progress? People worked never got paid then was thrown off that island, now it’s karma, you all lost focus on the real matter and what your ancestors fought for, not only here but down those same so call not from here, the UK will take over and it’s all because of the mind set of the lost people of Israel.

Those that have been kept downtrodden shall rise and those that are marching will find their comfort in Her Majesty’s prison system. Long Live The Queen. This coming year there shall be parades for Her Majesty in the BVI!!! Hip hip horray!!

I don’t want to see our constitution suspended… but I also don’t want things to stay the same. In a perfect world I would prefer if the UK gave this new Unity Government a deadline to address key recommendations made in the coi report otherwise the constitution will be suspended. I don’t think its that we cant do no better I just think we just haven’t felt like we had to do any better before this. As for the march… Yall have to get rid of some of those crooks from being the face of the movement. The optics of having the same people who been abusing our corrupt system be the face of the fight agains uk direct rule dont make sense.

This “unity” government was self appointed, not elected. You really think they aren’t in it for themselves?

  14. Permission says:

Legally a protest now must seek permission from the Guv and approval by the cabinet. Without those approvals any protest is a summary offense punishable by arrest, trial and sentencing in Magistrate’s Court. The possible charges are breach of the peace, unlawful assembly, affray, riot and rout.

Protesters might want to bring their lawyers with them on Wed. afternoon if the Guv declines their application for this protest.

rotten apples do not help the rest apples to stay unblemished

Those are generalisations, you can not lump everyone in the same category. There is freedom of speech and people should have a right to protest if they see fit without fear of victimisation. There are some honest hardworking people there. Stop trying to instill fear.

  20. Really says:

Why do we the people have to put up with these protesters interrupting traffic. Most of the population want to see the place cleaned up. The only part of the constitution to be revoked is the one which enabled them to have too much power and be so corrupt. And all these parts of the constitution have been written and implemented by elected officials to start with.
