Secret reviews? Governor wants unpublished COI reviews released

A number of good governance reviews emanating from the Commission of Inquiry (COI) Report remain inaccessible to the public months after they have been completed and Governor John Rankin has once again expressed concerns over the issue.

The Governor previously threatened to publish reviews on his own if the government was unwilling to do so, and has now repeated his willingness to do so in his third quarterly report on the framework for the Implementation of the Commission of Inquiry Recommendations.

Governor Rankin said since his last quarterly review, he has issued eight press statements linked to the COI and conducted three press conferences that are available online.

“I have made no secret of my desire for the public to be able to digest, scrutinise and hold leaders to account on the basis of the findings of the COI and subsequent activity,” the Governor stated.

But even as he expressed pleasure that Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley made a number of reviews public after the House of Assembly (HOA) was recalled before the elections, the Governor suggested these remain largely inaccessible.

As a result, the Governor expressed that he has resorted to publishing audits himself. “I will do so in relation to the reviews and other documentation if accessibility issues are not resolved and if reviews are not laid in a timely fashion in the House of Assembly,” Governor Rankin stated.

The Governor further indicated that plans for COI-related communications within the Premier’s office appear to have been stalled.

He added that much of the content of reviews is uncontentious, explaining that they set out a path to reform that the public will be interested in reading or influencing.

“We are now halfway through the process of delivering the necessary reforms and public communication, consultation, and engagement by all parties will be vital to ensuring that these reforms ‘take root’,” the Governor added.

This is a really good initiative from the Governor. The tax paying public need to see what is in these reviews.

It’s funny it’s taken the unelected Governor to do it instead of our elected government, (albeit elected on an unrepresentative franchise).

It might explain why we have such poor infrastructure despite the billions of government revenue paid in since the 1980s.

Please hold our Government’s hands right in the fire; let them burn for keeping us in the dark. They promised “sunshine” and all we’ve had are overcast days. I want an accounting of every dollar they spend because that’s the only way they will stop their uncontrolled spending, like junkets to Miami and other parts of the world. Where are the audits of the GSB’s?? I want to know who authorized the buying of a new fleet of BVIEC trucks as our power bills doubled; what all the Board members are paid along with “perks” like vehicles, etc.
Let the sun shine on us!!

An investigation need to be taken to find out why naturalisation as bvislanders are not given the name amount of pressure by the Governor’s office. They pushing belongership but not naturalisation because the persons who applied won’t even be considering naturalisation, especially if they are already british and american. Get the people naturalisations going with the same steam as he is pushing belongership so that they can continue on their path to becoming british citizens.

STFU!!! When y’all not allowed to use people and rape the country, everything is the white man’s fault. Funny how yall wanna label the entire UK as racist, but will gladly go there to live, seek employment or play sports for them. You will bring down and belittle your own black brothers & sisters who are from other islands because you see yourselves as innocent little saints SMH. Some of you are in for a rude awakening if you continue to live being bitter and miserable.

  13. Advice to Governor says:

Dear Mr. Governor, please stop wasting your breath. It is clear that the people of the BVI do not care what is in the reports. They will continue to vote for whomever they can get the most benefits from. Many of them were reelected even though the evidence were stacked high against them so I would advise you to leave the BVI people alone. If they continue on the path they will bring their own demise on their heads. It is only a matter of time.

Play sports for them? What are you talking about?

  15. @ok gov says:

Only when things don’t suit us we complain. We want independence but how is the greater percent of the territory going to agree with this? The place needs to fix, we need laws to protect us and our tax dollars and we want to ensure that victimization is stomped out.

  16. Clarity says:

Back Increments have to be calculated. The calculations go through a series of checks to ensure things are in order. Then back to Human Resources to be inputted in collaboration with the treasury. I honestly believe that if this was directly under the Governor we would have already been paid.

  17. @OK GOV says:

ITS ONLY THAT SQUARE HEAD DUDE WITH WIG THAT IS BLOGGING ALL THE RACIAL LYRICS (
OVER & OVER ) USING ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT NAMES , ESPECIALLY , ON HIS ,( YLLO SITE ) WHICH IS HIS PLAY PEN AFTER HE FAILED TO TURN THE HONORABLE ( HOA ) INTO HIS PERSONAL PROPERTY , SO THATS HOW HE FLEXES OFF HIMSELF NOW / OUR NEW COACH SAW THROUGH HIS ( WIG ) AND DROPPED KICKED HIS ASZ OUT BEFORE HE EMBARRASS THE HONORABLE HOUSE ANY FURTHER , ( THANKFULLY ) I DONT THINK HE COULD OF GET THAT JOB IN MR STOUTT DAYS , NAHHHH / HE SIMPLY DOESN’T HAVE THE INTEGRITY ( AND WE ALL KNOW THAT , BUT THE COACH HAD HIM THERE TRYING TO MAKE IT LOOK REAL , BUT THIS AINT HOLLYWOOD

  18. Deh Watcha says:

    @ Advice to Governor….

They Do not. At first everyone enjoyed the little gossip the reports provided and that’s it. Once people realised names were being published, many realised their own name could be there.

Persons risked their jobs to leak information and it made no difference to persons in this country once they get what they have been getting.

They care nothing about transparency, accountability or good governance. That is why there is so much push back against the governor.

The past government received $11M in insurance to the admin building and it isn’t even halfway (the contracts signed do not add up to $11M), they signed a +$9M contract for the DDM building and no update is ever given. Thats $20M that has for all intents just been wasted away. No accountability as to the expenditure.

But I glad fo all ayo who vote fo dem….Dem should k;!! ayo.

  19. Again? says:

Yes we are indeed of such knowledge. However, Look how Honorable Wheatley has gone waste 250,000.00 in times like this, He now will be judged by his lack of consideration for the BVI’s true needs.
This is exactly why the COI is necessary.
