Sharie deCastro blasts Opposition for hypocrisy
Education Minister Sharie deCastro has slammed Opposition members for what she perceived as hypocritical and theatrical behaviour during House of Assembly (HOA) debates, accusing them of prioritising political gains over genuine discourse.
Speaking in the House of Assembly last week, deCastro expressed disappointment in how Opposition members handle discussions, particularly when the cameras are on. “The level of theatrics that has been portrayed in this House, it’s really disappointing… it’s disparaging,” deCastro said.
She pointed out that the public sees a very different image of the House’s proceedings compared to what happens behind the scenes in closed-door committee meetings.
deCastro expressed frustration with the Opposition’s tendency to publicly criticise initiatives after privately supporting or helping to shape them. She described this behaviour as disingenuous. “You have members asking ministers questions to get details on why certain things are in the set, and then those same members get up and speak the complete opposite… it’s embarrassing,” deCastro said.
Greater integrity needed
The Education Minister called for greater integrity among members of the House, urging them to be honest and consistent in their public and private statements. She emphasised the importance of transparency and expressed her commitment to sharing accurate information with the public. “I will continue to be transparent and give the information with the hopes that members will share that information with the public,” deCastro expressed.
deCastro’s remarks come in the wake of ongoing discussions regarding a budget shortfall where Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley disclosed that the new public service salary structure resulted in a $13.3 million budget deficit. A review by the Ministry of Finance showed the actual cost for public officers’ salaries to be $25,056,518, revealing a variance from the initially budgeted $11.7 million.
The minister shared that while she was not entirely satisfied with the final budget, her team worked hard to ensure that the ministry’s most critical needs were met. “Was I pleased with the final amount that we were given? The answer is no… but we continuously have to make compromises,” she explained.
Political nonsense
Reflecting on the issue of public discourse in the House, deCastro lamented the tendency of some members to engage in what she described as “political nonsense” when the cameras are rolling. She expressed concern that such behaviour could discourage young people from entering politics. “There are other young persons who want to get involved in politics, and if we continue doing what we’re doing here, setting the example that we’re setting, how much people going to want to come in here?”
Despite her criticisms, deCastro acknowledged that she has a good working relationship with most opposition members but stressed the need for better collaboration to address the challenges facing the territory effectively. “I’m going to continue to extend the olive branch whether it’s taken or not,” she said, urging her colleagues to “stop misleading the public.”

If you miscalculate the budget by 13-20 million dollars anywhere in the world the opposition going to have a field day with you. If anyone is being hypocritical it’s her for pretending that she is doing work in HOA when she is not doing a damn thing but getting on a plane every chance she get. She even missed House of Assembly serious sessions to allegedly go to a wedding for a young lady she don’t even know. Anything to get out of doing work. She is a lazy, disrespectful, disorganized, bu**y with her mother behind her pulling all the strings. Sharie shut and go in the corner child!

The Chickens are coming Home to Roost. That is why the COI was necessary for the Virgin Islands for such a time like this. There is more exposure to take place. Why should the Citizens of the Territory made to take responsibility for the incompetence pf the Government? Casting Blame to cover their own personal Agenda? This should be added to the Social Security So-Called Grant Monies posed as Stimulus circulated to Friends and Families and Fake Businesses and Music Fest unaccounted Monies and now this 20 Mil and the Greedy Bill Monies should and Must be deducted from the Legislators Salaries. The Honest people of this territory need to have a discussion with the Minister responsible for Overseas Territory to voice their Concerns on the way forward.
