Significant, uncontrolled rise in prices – FAHIE
The relatively high cost of living in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) has made it almost impossible for persons to live decently in the territory, said Leader of the Opposition Andrew Fahie.
He stated that the cost of living is among reasons he will move a motion of no confidence tomorrow (August 1) in an attempt to have Minister of Finance Dr D Orlando Smith replaced as finance minister.
“I am taking this course of action to allow for urgent actions to be taken by the minister of finance to address the significant, uncontrolled increase in the cost of living in the BVI. It is now almost impossible to live decently in the BVI due to this factor.”
“Yet, with no remorse, the taxes continue to increase. Yet, without remorse, careless spending is on the increase by Government greater than ever. Families are catching hell. Single mothers are doing their best to make ends meet but cannot, because of the many poor financial decisions being made by leadership,” Fahie further said.
Dr Smith, who also is the territory’s premier, is likely to use his 11-2 seat majority in the House of Assembly to block the motion of no confidence being planned.
