Sister Islands programme seeks emergency response volunteers
The Sister Islands Programme Unit has invited residents to volunteer for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), an initiative aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness across Anegada, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke.
Coordinator Monel Nickie highlighted the significance of having the Sister Islands communities properly equipped for disaster situations.
By volunteering for CERT, individuals will be instrumental in the immediate response and recovery efforts during emergencies, especially when there is a delay in access to professional emergency services.
Nickie underscored the necessity for a comprehensive strategy that includes various emergency stakeholders, governmental agencies, and the wider community to ensure an effective response to disasters.
“The revival of CERT marks a critical opportunity for residents to actively contribute to protecting lives and property. “Persons are encouraged to become volunteers to strengthen disaster preparedness and response,” Nickie urged while indicating the crucial role these volunteers will play in boosting the islands’ resilience to disasters.
Persons interested in becoming CERT volunteers are advised to sign up through their local district office by contacting the offices directly in Anegada: 368-9712, Virgin Gorda: 468-9542, and Jost Van Dyke District Offices: 468- 9013.
The Sister Islands Programme Unit acts as the liaison for the Department of Disaster Management on the Sister Islands and is dedicated to ensuring that these communities receive prompt and adequate assistance before, during, and after disasters.
This initiative is part of a wider endeavour to enhance the quality and delivery of government services throughout the Sister Islands, reflecting a commitment to building a resilient and well-prepared community capable of facing any emergency scenario.
