Skelton offended, says criminals being alerted in governor’s report

Opposition Leader Ronnie Skelton said he was offended by the recent publication of a comprehensive law enforcement review that was commissioned by the Governor and conducted by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services.

He argued that the report could inadvertently warn criminals about law enforcement tactics and vulnerabilities.

The law enforcement review covers a wide array of departments, including police, Customs, immigration, and the judicial system. It aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of law enforcement and judicial processes in the territory.

The review, which includes a staggering 138 recommendations across various justice and security agencies, has sparked a significant backlash from lawmakers for potentially undermining the local forces’ effectiveness.

Skelton criticised publicising the review, suggesting it could have been handled with less fanfare while corrective actions were quietly implemented.

“Why do you want to make something look bad? You’re destroying the whole country in the process,” Skelton argued in the House of Assembly yesterday. The Opposition Leader stressed that such disclosures could hurt the morale of law enforcement personnel.

Skelton’s comments echoed a deep-seated concern about the timing and manner of the report’s release, which he felt paints an unfairly grim picture of the BVI’s law enforcement landscape.

“The people who work in the police force and other organisations who feel that they are doing such a fantastic job, and they are now saying that they are incompetent, [that] they have no idea what they are doing,” Skelton lamented about the portrayal of local forces.

Skelton also voiced objections to the specificity of the recommendations, such as those concerning the police force’s operational details, which he believes should not be accessible to the public and could compromise the effectiveness of police operations.

“If there were administrative or strategic initiatives that need to be put in place, it doesn’t need to be a public display of foolishness. It doesn’t need to be this way,” Skelton argued. “Whether the people on the ocean have ballistic guns and ballistic uniforms, and whether they have the appropriate guns; wait, wait, wait, does that need to be in a report for the general public? So what are you telling the criminals?”

Despite his criticisms, Skelton acknowledged the need for improvements across the agencies mentioned in the report but insisted that these could have been addressed more discreetly.

I will second that, every last one of them is being watched. Thing is, they don’t and will never know who is doing the watching. As a matter of fact, everyone in the BVI is under big brother watch. However, if you are not involved in anything shady or illegal you have nothing to worry about. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING!!!!.

HON. Skelton, with the long time Culture of the Virgin Islands I know this will NEVER happen But, until some of the Crooked Politicians either die or are forced out of our HOA, this Territory will remain as is. Some of the most dangerous Criminals are sitting in our HOA debating this Bill because they think they will NEVER be exposed. But guess what, 2024 is the Year of EXPOSURE! It is only a matter of time which is drawing very near. The COI was a wake up call BUT some are still thinking they have gotten away. Time is Longer than Twine as the saying goes. Whatever in darkness will and MUST come to Light! Tick Tock, Tick Tock. The local Cpmmunity is still in contact with the Allies. The sooner the Criminals give up. the sooner this Territory will revert back to normalcy. Until then. Hon, Skelton Think and Look beneath the Surface.

  22. Guy Hill says:

In the end there is a need for law enforcement and the wider community to develop a culture where the corrupt fears the incorruptible and not the other way around. We need to do better.

  25. A stitch in time saves nine. says:

If Skelton shut his mouth and examine and execute the 138 recommendations, our society would be better. Bad politicians destroy their communities. Stop behaving like the world’s most foolish politicians.
