Some 800 students to benefit from back-to-school packages, treat in VG

Vincent Wheatley

Parents of some 800 primary and secondary school-aged students in the Ninth District are set to benefit from a back-to-school treat this coming Sunday.

Ninth District Representative Vincent Wheatley told BVI News that his Back-to-School Fiesta will take place at the Virgin Gorda Recreational Grounds from 10 am.

“It is going to be a fun day for the kids. We are doing things like free haircuts for the boys, face painting, bouncy castles, there will be food, clothing giveaways, vouchers for uniforms, backpacks filled with pencils, crayons, geometry sets, pens, books, and other stationery. It’s a full package,” Wheatley said.

Unemployment still high in district, parents need help

Wheatley said the initiative is primarily to provide assistance to parents; many of whom are still struggling to secure a steady job since the 2017 disasters.

He further noted that “unemployment is very high in the Ninth District”.

“Since the hurricane passed, many hotels shut down, and a lot of families, particularly in the Ninth District are still not back to normal. So it is a way of easing the burden of going back to school,” the district representative said.

He said he intends to put on the event every year and told BVI News that this year’s staging has amounted to roughly $15,000.

“It is something I would like to see in every district for all the kids in the BVI,” Wheatley said.

The back-to-school event will also feature a series of motivational speakers such as Henderson Tittle, Feliza Fenty, The God Movement, among others.

Lots of free stuff to go back to an unfit building. Noisy class room, shared spaces between the high school and primary that makes learning difficult. 2 yrs after the storm and this is what we celebrate? Free pencil and cheap China stuff? # fixtheschool.
