Stop saying nothing is happening in BVI — Premier

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr Natalio Wheatley.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has warned critics to stop saying that nothing was happening with the economy in the BVI, urging them to focus on creating opportunities for locals to achieve success instead.

Dr Wheatley highlighted a recently inked development deal between the government and JOMA properties and efforts by local construction entrepreneur James Todman, among others, and suggested there was evidence of a strong economy.

The Premier lashed out at his critics, asserting that they should focus on enabling locals to thrive in the economy instead of distributing thousands of work permits annually to people from various countries.

“Let’s stop encouraging persons and telling persons, ‘Well, nothing is happening in the BVI’. We must direct them to where the opportunities are,” the Premier said. “An economy like the BVI that’s producing so many jobs. You give out so many work permits. How can you say that nothing is happening in the BVI?”

Opposition members countered Dr Wheatley’s position by asserting that the economy is at a standstill, with residents enduring hardships while the Premier persists in spending money on parties.

D6 Representative Myron Walwyn expressed concern recently about the economy as it approached the second quarter. “We still have an ailing economy with absolutely nothing happening to stimulate its growth,” Walwyn stated.

He also contended that the lack of jobs has pushed many previously middle-class citizens towards poverty, emphasising the government’s inadequate response to essential services such as a reliable supply of potable water.

Walwyn further questioned the government’s spending priorities. He contrasted the minimal budget for fixing water infrastructure with the expenditure on the upcoming Music Festival, which he believes offers minimal benefit. He also pointed to crumbling roads and struggling small businesses as evidence of misplaced priorities.

Our roads are 3rd world class..this is after 30 years of financial services industry with a budget of $200 million – $400 million annually of the BVI government

why don’t you start with taking care of this first – seems like a good starting point!

Next step in water, power and then we moved to the real investments

    • Correction for Criticism says:

BVI GDP in the 1990s early 2,000s ran around $ 1 billion, i.e. $ 1,000 million per year.
The answer as to why nothing is being taken care lies in finding out where all that money went. It was found to be pretty much gone after Irma came through.

      • The money was not stolen says:

it was used to pay unemployment benefits to locals (sorry I meant Government job salaries – in most places in the world it is call unemployment insurance 🙂 ). It is a crime though that it was not invested in infrastructure, including schools, for a better future.
