Stop trying to destabilise the territory

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr Natalio Wheatley.

Premier Natalio Wheatley has spoken out against residents who have been spreading rumours of strike action among various public sector groups, saying their actions threaten to destabilise the territory.

Last week, rumours swirled in social media circles as residents spoke of alleged strike action the police, Public Works and others were planning to show their dissatisfaction with their working conditions and delays in the payment of their increments.

However, those rumours were shut down by the Premier and Police Commissioner Mark Collins at a press conference last week. The Premier added that the persons who are spreading the rumours are making mischief that can have serious impacts.

“Those persons who are making mischief by sending out this false information are helping to destabilize the territory and it’s causing a great deal of panic and concern. And I ask for those persons to stop it,” Premier Wheatley stated.

He added that the rumours may also impact people who have investments in the territory.

“It may be politically convenient to spread these narratives but it causes a great deal of uneasiness and discontent among our residents as well as persons who are investing in the BVI and those who want to visit. So, we call on persons to stop that please. [This is] not to say that persons (civil servants) don’t have areas of discontent. We remain open and engaged with persons who have areas where they have challenges,” Premier Wheatley said.

The Premier said he is willing to hear from groups of public servants who feel like their voices aren’t being heard but wouldn’t want any group to take drastic measures to get the government’s attention.

Last week, fire marshals at the T.B. Lettsome airport staged a sickout which caused an abrupt closure of the facility and inconvenienced a number of travellers. After that, there were increased rumours of strike action being planned by police and Customs workers. However, the authorities said these rumours aren’t true but admitted that some groups wanted to meet with the government to discuss areas they were concerned with.

  1. More lies says:

He is making a very serious accusation by saying the people who are suffering in the territory are trying to destabilize the territory by speaking facts about planned sick outs (which is a form of strike action no matter what they want to call it). His leadership it what seems to have destabilized the territory and as much as he does not want to accept it, he should start listening.

  5. Styles. says:

    Natalio,

Can you please stop playing the blame game.

You have achieved exactly nothing since taking office a few years ago.

Your ministers are clearly corrupt, yet you defend them.

The roads are clearly in poor state, yet you do nothing.

Tourism hasn’t improved one bit (third world country ferry dock and airport) yet you throw a party to celebrate this.

TAKE ACTION AND ACTUALLY FINALLY DO SOMETHING AND STOP BLAMING EVERYONE BUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CORRUPT PEOPLE.

  7. Salty Fish says:

So, are you really trying to say, “shut up and stop criticizing your Government’s ineptitude because it is making you look bad”?

Just seems the people’s previous silence, all while letting you guys do what you want just does not seemed to have worked out too well for the people of this Territory. In all honesty, the general public feels that it is you that seems to be doing their best to destabilize this Territory!

Whether you see that or not depends on your own narcissism and ability to see what is truly going on with our people.

  14. Poor Weak leader says:

Calling for Justice is not destabilizing the BVI
It shows your inability to lead the country
    You have lost:
    A) Integrity
    B) the confidence of the people
    C) the ability to stand up fot the justice of the people
    D) You are losing your way

    You are destroying our country

  16. done deal says:

Mr Premier, most of your ‘people’ feel the Territory is already destabilized by the ineptitude, greed and quickly broken promises of those we elected in good faith.

  17. mervyn says:

Maybe its time for a march. A march for justice, for sanity, and for our inconvenient dictactor to step down.

He cries every time someone says something bad. Whaa, little baby. Cry.

  18. Jesus wept says:

No you don’t have Lorna to blame. How about blaming those egotistical badtards who ignored her and wasted precious time while they argued over how to share up the spoils. In the end what did they get?
