PRESS RELEASE: Tortola Auto Group (TAG) has concluded its October promotion, ‘Drive For A Cause’ which raised much-needed funds to support the work of the BVI Cancer Society.

On Wednesday, TAG presented a cheque for $3,000 to the Cancer Society which represented a combination of part proceeds from vehicle sales in October and donations from customers who purchased vehicles during the promotion period.

Managing Director, Patricia Romney explained that the personal aspect of TAG’s affiliation with the Cancer Society is sadly related to the number of persons within her family that have been directly affected.

“Being so close and seeing the hurt to the actual individuals who suffered through such harrowing fights, motivated me to be part of an effort that fights to combat the disease and offer to nurture support to the caregivers and loved ones who lose close persons to the fight,” Romney stated.

While TAG’s partnership with the BVI Cancer Society will directly support their programs, including improved access to mammography screenings and cancer care support, Romney said families affected also need support.

Offering advice to families impacted by cancer, Romney said, “Allow yourself time to live. Encourage the loved ones to live through a sense of normalcy. It is difficult to be in control of one’s emotions, but the sense of normalcy expressed especially through laughter provides such positive energy for both persons. I strongly advocate for this form of therapy.”

She is hopeful that TAG’s donation along with those from customers who generously participated goes specifically to help the caregivers fulfil their roles that often drain personal resources.

“I also am hopeful that educating our people on proper dietary practices does help to prevent cancer. These are measures we need to spend time and efforts on equally,” Romney shared.

Through the partnership program, ‘Drive for a Cause’, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of select Hyundai, Ford and Honda models were set aside for the BVI Cancer Society.

President of the BVI Cancer Society, Gloria Fahie revealed that cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the Virgin Islands.

“On behalf of the members of the Cancer Society we wish to thank TAG for supporting the BVI Cancer Society with Drive For A Cause. We were very pleased that TAG got involved and it is the first time that car company got involved to partner with us. It a very good sign that a lot of companies are now getting involved and recognising the cause of cancer as a whole in the British Virgin Islands, not only Breast cancer but all cancer. Breast Cancer is a dreaded disease that has taken a lot of lives here in the BVI. It is the leading cause of death among women,” Fahie stated.

TAG customers who provided donations included Paul Bridgelall, Carmen Romney, Letisha Romney, Carson Smith, Jagdeo and Ramona Dasrat, John Danganan, Shemois Hodge and Collin Thomas.
