Tax free! Gov’t approves tax waiver on imports

Premier Dr D Orlando Smith today confirmed that Government will not impose tax on some items imported into the territory by residents.

He said “individuals and businesses are permitted to import supplies to assist in rebuilding efforts. To support this effort, Government has decided to waive all taxes for importers bringing in particular supplies.”

Speaking at a press conference with other members of Government today, Dr Smith said the tax waiver will run until December this year.

He noted that the tax break applies for items such as food, water, building materials, electrical fixtures and materials, plumbing fixtures and materials, household furniture and appliances, pharmaceuticals and cleaning supplies.

“This list will be reviewed certainly at the end of that three-month period and possibly before,” Dr Smith said.

The premier had promised to look into the possibility of an import tax-break during a meeting with business community earlier this month.
