Territory-wide marine training coming, says Premier
Residents wanting to tap into the multimillion-dollar marine industry will soon have the training opportunity to do so, Premier Andrew Fahie has said.
Speaking at a thanksgiving service at the Cyril B Romney Tortola Pier Park on Wednesday, Premier Fahie said there will be special sittings in each of the nine electoral districts to discuss the training opportunities by next week.
“We believe it is an area of real growth potential,” the Premier said. “Our people must come first at all times.”
Funding for entrepreneurs
In the meantime, Fahie said funds will be allocated for persons who are interested in becoming entrepreneurs.
“We are also determined to encourage and invest in small business development,” he said.
“We are seeking to invest a minimum of $1 million initially that will aid in the establishment of new small business and more money that will go into helping expand existing small businesses.”
Transparent policy framework coming
Premier Fahie further said plans are afoot to implement a ‘transparent and solid policy framework that will guide the development in the territory’.
He explained: “Proper development will not be guaranteed by ad hoc policies and arrangements nor attempting quick-fix legislation. It is important that we get a functioning policy unit in place with some urgency. It is an important mechanism to ensure that the renewal that the people voted for and expect shall take place.”
He said the policy unit shall embrace broad consultations in an ongoing endeavour to guarantee that the will of the people is actualised.
“To create the 1,000 jobs that we promised, we must be daring and bold,” he added.

Please explain to me where the money will be allocated from when we have not heard from the new government what the finances of the territory are?
Well the first thing the Premier was going to look at was the books. Yet we have not heard even a preliminary report… however we just afforded to transport atleast six people to VG, rented a space for a space for a closed door meeting. As opposed to transporting one person to Tola and having the meeting in the Premier’s Conference Room or other Government Facility.
Now I am not against unconventional nor inclusion but it has to make sense not just doing for the sake of words and checking boxes.
There is no inclusion in having a Cabinet meeting in VG because a Cabinet Meeting is not open to the public.
And I guess with all this being done we should assume that the country is not as broke as we were lead to believe.
But eventually we will here them say that the NDP left the country broke maybe on the next 6 months to a year. And the territory would drink it in without question…
Transportation not once but twice. Church Service and meeting
I was thinking the same thing.
VISIONARY IDEA HONORABLE FAHIE- MOVE AHEAD WITH THIS MARITIME IDEA AGGRESSIVELY- DON’T STUDY THE NAYSAYERS- THERE ARE SOME IN THIS COMMUNITY WHO ARE AGAINST THIS MOVE AS THEY BELIEVE THEY ALONE HOLD THE KEYS TO ACCOMPLISHING IT
@Visionary Idea, I applaud you for seeing along with our unconventional premier. The BVI has some of the best sailing waters in the world and definitely in the Caribbean. We are often referred to as the sailing capital of the world. Charley and is wife upon visiting the BVI perhaps for the first time, caught the vision of sailing vacations in the BVIs. Our waters are deep, sailing is by line of sight (you can see where you are heading) we have many islands, (though we have been selling them of with some persons owning 2 and wants more)
+
++ So enchanted the Cary’s were with the idea of a sailing vacations business in our pristine waters, they started the Moorings in 1969 with 6 35-foot yachts. By 1981 (12 years later)
their idea, and vision had become so fruitful that they opened another yachting base in St. Lucia and in another 2 years opened yet another in Tahiti. See the Moorings history Here: http://bit.ly/TheMooringsBVIVision Today the Moorings is operating all over the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and elsewhere. During the campaign of 2015 Hon. Frazer also campaigned extensively about training for individuals to work in the marine industry. The yachting industry is bigger than the hotel and villa businesses and quite likely larger than the cruise shipping. Today, 50 years later, isn’t it about time that we catch the vision that the yachting industry is lucrative and holds much promise for creating jobs, businesses and greater prosperity for our country and way of life. I say, lets open our minds to our greater good, lets be
Optimistic and support our government and its initiatives. We have a country to rebuild and develop and hold on to. Let’s please put our country above ourselves and petty ideas and thinking. Forward ever
The NDP gave away millions and refused to say anything. Myron proposed changing the laws of the territory so that they wouldn’t have to explain what they do with our $$$. And 2 weeks after elections when the ppl haven’t even found a comfortable setting for their new chair yet you NDPers are more critical of them than you were of the last gov who didn’t produce after being there for nigh a decade.
You making the dog sick. Even after the NDP won the elections people gave them a chance to organize then execute. If you act without gameplan you will not be efficient let the damn pot boil b4 you complain about the taste.
Please call Mrs. Keshia Davis- Barnes for Training in the Hospitality Industry she is the expert. I know she use to run the hospitality program at the college but she has a new business now.
Ok. Job for unsuccessful candidate for the 6th district.
They would want to have a discussion with the representative for the 6th district and get her buy-in and input
“Nations rise and fall, flourish and decay, by what they believe in and by what their culture stands for.”
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.”
We shall Rise!
Lets face it; the people have spoken; just like they did in 2011 and 2015. Get over it folks!.
To those on those whose party didn’t win, and candidates who didn’t win their seat, let’s get over it and move forward. The past NDP government was in power for two terms. Lets thank them and pass the Baton. It happens in sports, in various matches and at the largest world sport; the Olympics. The Hon. Andrew Fahie led Vip government is now our government; government of all the people; a historic moment in time indeed. There are several “First Time” events in this new government. First time a young lady still in her 20s was elected and serving as a minister of government; only the second time a woman was elected and serving as an At Large minister; first time a woman from a sister-island has been elected and serving as Minister in the HOA. First time in our history a “Cabinet Meeting” held on Virgin Gorda and will be the First time when the Cabinet meet on Anegada and Jos Van Dyke (in the near future).
Thank you Premier Fahie for such a brilliant plan of inclusion!
For far too long, others were able to become successful, here, in this field, while Belongers’ full participation, remained paltry, at best.
There will be some hesitation among the industrys’ behemoths, but forge ahead with your plans, you must!
The country needs this and the time for “We’ers” in the industry, in mass, is NOW!
Swimming lessons in school!
That’s where it starts, Hon. Premier.
Glad to see you making this a serious issue.
But don’t forget – swimming lessons in school!
