‘The thought never crossed my mind’ — Walwyn on running in D4

Walwyn

By Esther Durand, BVI News Staff

Chairman of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Myron Walwyn has dismissed speculations that he is throwing his proverbial hat in the ring for the upcoming by-election in the Fourth Electoral District.

Walwyn was not re-elected because he failed to secure sufficient votes as a Territorial At-Large candidate in the recently-concluded general elections.

But, following the sudden resignation of NDP legislator Mark Vanterpool, rumours began circulating that the NDP leader would attempt to carve his way back into public office by contesting the now-vacant Fourth District seat.

“This is ridiculous. I am saying no and the thought never crossed my mind,” Walwyn told BVI News on Thursday.

He also said the party’s executive members have not yet discussed who they will field for the by-election considering Vanterpool’s resignation ‘just happened the other day’.

“The party will make an announcement at the appropriate time,” Walwyn said.

PVIM also contesting by-election

Meanwhile, campaign manager for the Progressive Virgin islands Movement (PVIM) Dr Michael Turnbull said the party will have a candidate in the upcoming race.

“The PVIM is not a one-election movement. It is a movement that is here to stay and plans to be involved in the future of the country. And, as such, this is an opportunity where we can be involved and feel we can be a contributor to allow people to make a choice. So, we plan whenever it is announced to offer the people the opportunity to do so through a candidate,” he said.

When asked about Karl Scatliffe who was the PVIM’s Fourth District candidate at the 2019 General Elections, Dr Turnbull said he was unable to provide an answer.

He said the PVIM’s constitution outlines the requirements to select a candidate and ‘does not exclude anyone’.

He said the party is simply following the rules and ‘give everyone the opportunity’.

He further said the PVIM is set to meet soon and the matter of who will contest the by-election will be on its agenda.

Lessons learned

Dr Turnbull said the party has learnt vital lessons from the general election.

“We have all had debriefings … we have listened to some of the feedback from the people, and we plan to incorporate them as we continue to build our movement,” he said.

PU considering to run

Chairman of the Progressives United (PU) Julian Fraser who spoke to our news centre on Wednesday said the party may have a candidate in the by-election.

“We are still in the very early stages of discussing that matter, and it is something that we will consider,” he said.

Fraser said the PU is likely to have a clear indication as to the way forward by the weekend.

Dr Vincent Scatliffe was PU’s candidate for the Fourth District in the recent general election. He garnered 24 votes.

The VIP’s intentions

BVI News also sought out Virgin Islands Party Chairman, Premier Andrew Fahie whose only comment was: “Congress of the VIP will confirm shortly.”

Luce Hodge Smith who ran under the VIP banner secured 385 votes, representing the second highest number of votes garnered in District 4. The now-resigned Vanterpool brought home the win with 442 votes.

Governor Augustus Jaspert is yet to appoint a date for the by-election which, according to law, must be held within two months of a representative relinquishing the post.

Vanterpool announced his resignation on March 5.

        (1) Run Myron…..

@Think People offered the most thoughtful and correct political reason why you should. A strong opposition s definitely needed.

        (2) The country needs strong intellectual assets to help guide it through. We should be combining our political and intellectual resources for the benefit of progress.

In the final analysis, it is not a party, but the strength of the intellect within each member, and the contribution of non members alike that will build solid foundations towards future progress.

Get back in the game and run brother! Many have seen your worth and contributory capabilities. And yes, the author is a so called full blooded native/local/ BVIslander/whatever.

The, a people, need all hands on deck to help guide the ship. Europe, UK, Japan, China or Australia will not guide our ship, but would sooner re-colonize it and us.

        (3) Would like to see brother Skelton get in also.

Honestly MVW I think he is a power house really. He is aggressive in getting things accomplished. Look at how fast we got election results this year in comparison to the slow outdated drawn out process. I sure he assisted with this. Let’s talk about culture look how he brought it alive, local dress, local song local pledge, give the Mr.some credit. His downfall is he needed to be humble, he needed to listen to our people, he needed to admit that mistakes were made. He needed to apologize.

Now he needs to relax and do an honest self-assessment, and possibly return to politics in the future.

He has acknowkedged the mistakes from time the party hit the trail… He also acknowledged that the previous government did not do there best at communicating with the public…but despite this the territory continues to crucify him for the many misgivings.

I will be honest to say when he first entered politics I did not expect him to go far because of his demeanor.

That isn’t something that he can change easily… But what needs to be realized is that he has earned the right to be confident in himself and his accomplishments.

But in reflection, he is more humble than we think and is very willing to listen and take direction especially on things outside of his forte.

A leader is someone that listens but is able to decipher and make a stern decision when it is needed. Not every decision will be right but a leader is also grown enough to admit the wrongs and learn from them.

I can’t speak for the rest of the territory but I see many of these qualities in Hon. Walwyn and I hope he will return Better and Stronger for 2023.

”the people have spoken and the voice of the people is the voice of God.” Get over NDP and Chairman Hon. Walwyn’s loss. As Sister Joyce sang in her song, “the NDP Bulldozed our country”; and Myron was a part of them. Decisions made by the Cabinet are agreed to by all the ministers. Hon. Myron is a Lawyer and knows better. In this very week, Police commissioner Matthew in an interview reminded us that he has Myron’s File and that Myron is under investigation in relation to the wall around ESHS. Our country is broken. The UK has mandated that we setup a board (the RDA) to deal with the 300-million pounds they are prepared to back the loan for.
The governor just yesterday spoke of the huge challenge the new government has to deal with and a lot of it has to do with us not having any money

He also said the party’s executive members have not yet discussed who they will field for the by-election considering Vanterpool’s resignation ‘just happened the other day’.

“The party will make an announcement at the appropriate time,” Walwyn said. Though the thought may not have crossed the NDP Chairperson, and former MEC mind,it seems as if he has not
rule it out. If the executive members nominate him, would he run? The power, social status, influence….etc of elected office is addicting. It is hard to resist the gravitational pull; the withdrawal is challenging.

Moreover, the bye-election is due by May 06 yet all the parties are dragging their feet on which candidate they will field. The VIP choice should be clear. PVIM, PU and NDP choices may take a day longer. We must shed the habit of campaigning a day or two before election. let the campaigning begin in earnest.

We all thought that Dr. Smith would be a good Premier too. It takes a lot more than being educated and a nice person to lead a nation. Sometimes there are too many people that were not elected that is steering the ship or giving bad advice. Sometimes the parties prefer a team that will agree with anything instead of a team of strong individuals that can actually contribute with good ideas not just distributing district allowances.

Pajaro cannot run because he was already informed by the Governor not to run but he wanted to show governor that he is boss and then he got the REAL rude awakening of who is the REAL BOSS, THE PEOPLE OF THE VI.

They are all being investigated and he will not put his hat in the ring to prevent any more political caos.

There are no regrets from voters that voted for change especially right now as the government has been in power for a mere few days. Myron has always been popular even with this election. Although he didn’t win he was still a very close 5th option with over 2000 votes. These comments just reflect that, as NDP supporters are still upset over the loss and would love for their savior to get another chance at redemption. So please dont misconstrue these comments as an acknowledgement of regret of voters. The only regret is from those that voted for NDP and watched their votes go up in smoke. All of a sudden NDP supporters want a “strong opposition” where was this call 4 years ago when there were only 2 members of the opposition. In fact if they had their way Fraser would have been replaced by OJ. These salty fanboys and girls still trying to push their narrative almost 3 weeks after their defeat. Turn those frowns upside down and let us all just support the Government of these beautiful Virgin Islands and unite as one.

Now is not the time for Myron to run anyway!

We should all expect him to retry in 2023; before the thunderstorm, not after the rain!

Let’s have a greatest hits line up: Myrin, Ronnie, Luce, Gerry, Dancia and Kedric. Then make them fight each other for the place.

Myron’s popularity is soaring. He may not have won this time and he is in a very good position. Myron, as a suporter and will always be a surpoter, continue to do what you are doing privately and plan your comeback. Let the ones who is in office deal with the stress, problems and sleepless nights trying to figure out what and how they are going to get the Country back together. Mark my words, you are going to be the one that they will be calling soon to help clean up the mess. Why? because you have the knowledge. I am a NDP surporter yes, I was upset that NDP lost but, I look at it as every disappointment as a blessing in a good way. Let VIP deal with the problems and the lash back that is coming.

@Cherry Blossom, for real, they wanted and thought they were going to punish Myron. But look now, they are the ones that is going to have all the stress. When it is all over, they are the ones that is going to be the sore losers.Myron is in the better position. They wanted to be in power positions and they are going to fail.People don’t be fooled, the BVI is going to take years to get back straight. Commander in Chief don’t have the guts to appoint a second in command with the nonsense about giving each member a 3 month run as second in command. That is a sign of weakness. LMAO. Remember now,it started wrong and it is going to end wrong.

Sometimes bad publicity is good publicity. Right now Myron popularity is at a all time high. As a outsider, the more they talk about him good or bad,the more you want to know about him. H*ll, he lost but he is more famous and popular than the ones who won.

Did you not get the Memorandum, paragraph 1 stating when you make assumptions you always end up looking like a fool? Where am I going to leave to? I guess back to Virgin Gorda VIA Peebles Conoo-moomoo. You have a good day.

    • You tell me says:

Its not about where you are from nor is it about any assumptions. Its about the FACT, that if this or ANY government fails, WE as a BVI fail and the consequence of that is WE, OUR children and future generations to come shit!. The immaturity of US, only seeing the ramifications of failure within the BVI only, is just that. Immaturity! Grow up and stop act your shoe size.

This born here or not from here thing matters not! Stop being an a$$! Oh – and before you start. I am a BORN, bred, indigenious BVIslander and on that note lets wish the BVI and any government well.
