Tourism Director highlights business continuity at regional conference

At a time when the government is being criticised for lacking a tourism plan, Director of Tourism Clive McCoy recently presented on Business Continuity Planning at a regional tourism conference.

McCoy, along with a small delegation of local officials, is currently in the Cayman Islands for the State of The Industry Conference (SOTIC), which is being held from September 2 to September 6 by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO).

The first two days of the conference were dedicated to business sessions for the CTO Executive Committee, board of directors, and ministerial council. However, the official SOTIC sessions began on Wednesday, featuring a diverse lineup of speakers, panelists, and experts who shared insights on topics such as sustainability, technology and innovation, aviation and connectivity, cruise tourism, leadership and legacy, and business continuity planning.

McCoy presented on the topic of Business Continuity Planning on the opening day of the conference, after attending the CTO business meetings.

He commented on the week’s events, reflecting on his current experiences and anticipating future developments.

“The business meetings were very productive and informative. I was pleased to serve as a resource person, sharing my knowledge on the experiences we have had in the territory that have shaped our business continuity planning. I am also looking forward to seeing our Junior Ambassador of Tourism, Ms. Adrianne Thomas, represent us at the highly anticipated CTO Tourism Youth Congress,” said Mr. McCoy.

BVI Junior Tourism Ambassador

Adrianne Thomas, named the 2024 British Virgin Islands Junior Ambassador of Tourism after winning the annual speech competition at U.P’s Cineplex in June, will represent the BVI at the Caribbean Tourism Youth Congress in the Cayman Islands, which also takes place during these dates.

Meanwhile, the government has been facing criticism for not having a tourism plan for the territory, most recently by Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn, who stated at a press conference on Tuesday, September 3, that despite the Premier’s claims, no tourism plan has been presented.

The Premier dismissed previous criticisms on the matter, asserting that his government is moving forward without a formal plan but is focused on improving access to the territory.

“We speak about a plan – and we’re going to develop a plan, we will. But I don’t want anybody to think that this thing is rocket science,” the Premier said late last year. “It’s not rocket science. The Virgin Islands is a beautiful place that people want to come to.”

Tourism has always been crucial to the BVI’s economy, attracting visitors with its renowned sailing events, scenic beauty, and vibrant cultural festivals like the annual emancipation festival. The intended plan aims to leverage these elements to enhance the islands’ appeal as a prime Caribbean destination.

  1. WTF says:

What a joke. The territory that had its entire industry shut down due to a hurricane, then to be affected by the pandemic (as everyone else was), only to have the PREMIER tell tourism basically to “f*ck off”, telling people about continuity of business?

This department can’t even keep its own office open!

Why we flying children around to conferences when when we can’t drive on our roads and people can’t get medical care? The parents should be ashamed as well as the government sponsors.
