Tourist Board mum on spending for Non-stop Concert

Dirk Walters of the BVI Tourist Board.

The controversial Non-stop Concert is just days away, yet there is no word on the amount of money that has been spent on preparation for the event so far.

Events Manager at the BVI Tourist Board, Dirk Walters appeared on Tola Radio yesterday, where he was asked to state how much of the $250,000 government allocated to the Tourist Board has been spent on the event so far.

In response, Walters said the figures will be made public once the event is over and audits are done.

“That will be made public after, as soon as everything is audited,” Walters said. When further pressed for an answer, Walters insisted that the funds spent can only be revealed after the show as many things have to be taken into account before final costs can be determined.

Walters was told thereafter that the public cannot rely on his promise to reveal costs at a later date since he made a similar promise last year that he is yet to deliver.

Walters still provided no answer regarding the funds spent on the Non-stop Concert so far. However, he reiterated that the concert is set to benefit several vendors, food and transportation businesses, as well as those offering accommodations.

In the meantime, Walters was asked whether the Tourist Board is seeing an uptick in flights from Miami to the BVI in light of the upcoming concert. He said he has no concrete data to show but expressed that there is a lot of interest in the show.

“A lot of persons that have already booked the non-stop flights have an interest in celebrating with us. Even the persons involved in the airlines, it’s a big deal for them. They’re very excited for themselves and us as a jurisdiction. So we’re tying everything in because this is the start of several events to come,” Walters explained.

Some sections of the community have said they are not in favour of the concert and some have called for people to boycott the event. However, it is not clear whether the majority of people plan to stay away from the show which is set to be held at the festival grounds on June 30.

We need to stop this. most countries spend millions of dollars for shows and we keep saying the BVI need to follow suit. Every time someone try to do something in the BVI is an issue. I will have the balls to say this, people of the BVI are the biggest hypocrites. We need to invest into more shows and stuff for the younger generation to do. This place is boring because of people like you who comment with negative energy. We need to put more into the people and the youths. Everything has to be an issue that’s why we cant have anything good here. Always someone bitter about something. Sick of this place and for your knowledge I am a local from Local parents so say something!

This presumably means that he has no idea what the cost is, and that he is not operating within a budget. He needs to be replaced. We can’t have people who don’t know what things are going to cost trying to organise this sort of event. Fire him.

This is what transparency looks like under a VIP government. People must have really been possessed to have put them back in.

Well well, you ever hear more nonsense, what kind of accountability is that. Has he ever heard of a running balance so he is aware and on top of the budget and its allocation. He should be ashamed to
Even have uttered such foolishness. We are doomed I tell ya!

These are the front men that we gave representing the people of tola. Anything that happens in any ministry under sl**man is blighted. Sl**man is a blight. Matter of fact lorna in we corner put us in this position. But truth be known it could have been worst. We could have had another emb***le in a man from the 8th sitting in power who doesn’t know the difference between his d**k and his b.*ls. so as much as I dispise the fact that tola has a set of persons leading who don’t know dust from Dawn we are really in deep dodo. Could one country be so cursed. Could one country be so forgotten by God to allow us to walk through the valley of the shadows of death with no hope, no eternal light at the end of the tunnel. Could God punish us so much as to give us an inept leader as a slow man to direct our paths. God what have we done, we had Andrew who had some foresight now you force sl**man upon us who have no sight. Yet leading men and women with their eyes wide open. Sl** man may very well go down as the greatest accidental premier ever. Able as a blind man to lead two sighted people down a dark dark place where only he can see. Lord please tell us what sin did we commit.

Carnival Village opens today in Cruz Bay. Several musicians are entertaining in this event and the Non stop concert on Tortola. Doubt that any folks from STT or STJ will attend the Non stop concert due to the expensive ferry fares.

@The Man Dirky…. People of the BVI need to understand that nothing is going to change with this government, The only change the BVI is going to see is if the UK takes over for at least 2 years and show these politicians they mean business.

Mr. Walters, I am so disappointed in you. I enjoyed your car discussions and followed you in your interviews etc and I was very impressed. The minute I heard you joined TB, I was concerned and now seeing you as the face of this unnecessary party has left me very disappointed in you. I thought you were one of our hopes for future but now I see it is just more of the same. So disappointed.

  17. Lol says:

Nobody coming BVI for this waste of time concert! VIP members of govt privately want to cancel but the new head coach not listening and they afraid to challenge him. They don’t want to show any cracks in their team because the power could swing to the Opps. Dirky is hurting his reputation being a puppet for these people. Like he is now a sellout and has become one of the good old boys in the club. This concert is a waste of money and I agree with Cindy that we need to take a stand and boycott the show. I am ashamed of ritical and Bertie and Kamau and Monea and other locals who signed up to just take taxpayer money!
