Trojan Design wins $1M contract to upgrade Fire & Rescue HQ

Trojan Design and Development Ltd has been awarded a contract worth $1,035,369.75 to enhance the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service’s headquarters in Road Town.

Following a recent contract signing, Works Minister Kye Rymer emphasised that this project will significantly improve the department’s emergency response capabilities across the territory.

“This initiative is part of a broader strategy to support the Fire and Rescue Service in its mission to protect the community and ensure public safety. The government is committed to investing in the necessary infrastructure and equipment to enable the service to perform its duties efficiently,” Rymer stated.

The project scope includes designing and constructing a new tender bay at the headquarters to accommodate nine fire trucks and associated appliances. It also features:

Enhanced Security: Installation of security cameras, external and internal lighting on all sides of the tender bay, and advanced security control systems.

Electronic Gates: Roll-up gates for the front and back of the bay, with control systems routed to the main control area, along with a manual override option.

Drainage Improvements: Upgrading the drainage system for the new roof and ground floor of the tender bay, in coordination with the existing fire station structure.

Flood Considerations: Ensuring the adjacent diesel tank area is above the flood zone, which may involve reconstructing or extending the existing structure.

Perimeter Fence: Constructing approximately 400 linear feet of a fence with a concrete base and chain-link top, including an electronically controlled gate with a manual option.

Training: Preparation of as-built drawings, manuals, and training for personnel on the new equipment, as well as commissioning the main control system for the gates, cameras, and access control systems.

While the start date for the project has not been specified, the government has indicated that it will commence soon, with the completion timeline to be announced at a later date.

So just three years ago construction works were completed there and we going to spend another million after a contractor was already mobilised and dealing with other work? Why weren’t these things done at the same time?

Logically fire is first on scene. Who knows what they get up to. Besides that in some places the first responders scoop the jewels.
