TS Ernesto expected to affect BVI from tonight

Tropical Storm Ernesto is expected to bring heavy rain, tropical storm-force winds, and a storm surge to the BVI by tonight, Tuesday, August 13, 2024. In response, the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) has announced the closure of all local airports due to the storm’s anticipated impact.

As of 5 a.m. today, the center of Tropical Storm Ernesto was located near latitude 16.2 North and longitude 61.3 West. Ernesto is moving west-northwest at approximately 20 mph (31 km/h), with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph (65 km/h) and higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is expected over the next few days, and Ernesto could reach hurricane strength by Thursday as it moves over the waters north of the Greater Antilles.

The storm is forecasted to produce total rainfall accumulations of four to six inches over parts of the BVI, with storm conditions expected to begin affecting the territory by this evening.

A storm surge is anticipated to raise water levels in the BVI by one to three feet above normal tide levels, accompanied by large and destructive waves near the coast. Swells generated by Ernesto are likely to create life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Residents are urged to review their hurricane response plans and make necessary preparations immediately. The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has emphasized the importance of stocking up on essentials and securing properties.

Additionally, the DDM has advised that the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services have issued a tropical storm warning for the territory.
