Turnbull calls for government to do more for local Cadet Corps

Stating that he believes the entity is being neglected, Representative for the Second District Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull is urging the government to do more for the Virgin Islands Cadet Corps.

The Opposition legislator made the plea at a recent sitting in the House of Assembly, where he revealed that the Virgin Islands Cadet Corps Council have not met in approximately three years.

“For the last two to three years, the Virgin Islands Cadet Corps Council — which is made up of the National Security Council with the inclusion of the Minister of Education & Culture together with the commandant of Cadet Corp — have not met,” Turnbull stated.

“We have them march at funerals and different ceremonies and all the different things but we are not taking the time. We have yet to find a home for these young people,” he added.

Turnbull, who has been the chairman of the Cadet Corps for more than two years, said the organisation is one that has a proven track record in the territory.

Major developmental role

He further said he believes it plays a major developmental role within each community and therefore should be a priority for government.

“I am still listed as the chairman of the Virgin Islands Cadet Corp I still having signing authority to be able to issue funds for this body. We have to do something, this is a body that you don’t have to worry about where these children will go, you know what they produce,” the second-term legislator said.

“This a statutory and an enacted body, that you know for sure young person’s given an opportunity to join and become a part of that deals with discipline, training, have the ability to deal with culinary, aviation and marine navigation,” Turnbull added.

The Cadet Corps is governed by the Virgin Islands Cadet Corps Act of 2008 and was approved by former Governor, David Peary.

Make yourself useful, why don’t you do what you are calling on the Government to do.

  5. BVI! says:

Mitch, go to your room and only come out when your home work is done!

  6. Disappointed says:

Just because he tends to complain about other things, doesn’t mean that what he said about the Corp isn’t true. The organization is being neglected and the government needs to do more for the ones they have marching up and down in funerals and events and that are being developed by this organization. This is a real problem if you actually went in to find out for yourself instead of being so quick to judge Mitch for stating the truth.

  7. Go and run then says:
