Turnbull heard gunshots while sitting in bed
Second District Representative Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull has urged lawmakers to do more in protecting residents of the territory given the increased rate of crime and growing presence of illegal guns.
Turnbull told the House of Assembly that his tranquillity was disturbed by the sound of guns barking loudly in the distance as he sat on his bed with his wife and child recently. Turnbull said others in the community heard the same explosions.
“It is becoming frightening to live in this country because you don’t know what’s going on,” Turnbull said. “That cannot be. It cannot be the norm and it cannot be accepted as a norm. Because when you hear the gunshots, usually what’s happening after that, something go on and then we lose another young life.”
He said killings are now happening in broad daylight and at night, even as the BVI continues to lose young people to gun violence and the underworld.
Turnbull said the issue appears to have become a norm because officials have not been aggressive enough in arresting the challenge and are only content to offer condolences and thoughts and prayers whenever another young life is lost.
Just yesterday, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) announced the arrest of a male who it said is suspected of being involved in a spate of recent gun crimes in the territory. Police said the man was arrested as he returned to the territory yesterday. Three other males were also arrested after police allegedly found them in possession of ammunition in the car that they were travelling.
The RVIPF said investigations into the matter are dynamic and remain ongoing.

Hes urging Lawmakers? Isnt he one? Every politician on their own beat. Many spouting lots of noise knowing fully well they dont care, others that do care are powerless. There is a young lady in the mount sage area opposite the mural on the wall. She has gathered alot of hurricane rubble and placed them at the dumpster in that area. Public Works, when cleaning the road put the rubbish on her property!
Mitch is allegedly seen on a regular basis hanging with the CGB druggies, gamblers, strip clubbers, handing out jobs and money to them, while going to church with them. Okay Mitch, start with the Cane youngster just arrested where are the guns coming from, what is the ammo for, what can you do to get the youth into legal jobs, clean up your front yard is a good start to wider participation.
