Two bids received for first phase of airport expansion

Terrance B Lettsome Airport

The government has received two bids for the first phase of the Terrance B Lettsome International Airport expansion.

According to Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer, an evaluation team is now due to assess the submissions.

Speaking on Virgin Islands Voice on September 30, Rymer said the tender opening took place that day. He described the first phase as a 787-foot extension at the western end of the airport’s runway.

The minister did not identify the bidders or disclose the value of their proposals, but said his team would conduct evaluations before the government provides further information on the bids to the public.

Rymer made the announcement after Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley discussed the government’s infrastructure spending and the competing demands on public funds, including work needed at the airport.

The BVI Airports Authority had invited firms and joint ventures in May to tender for the western runway extension at the Beef Island Airport.

The proposed contract covered design, construction, completion, testing and commissioning, as well as the correction of defects.

The wider airport expansion proposal has also been the subject of discussions between the government and the United Kingdom over financing and borrowing limits for years.

In February, Premier Wheatley said the UK was reviewing the project’s business case. He explained that the proposed borrowing would exceed the territory’s debt ratios and that the government was awaiting UK approval before proceeding to the next procurement stage.

Dr Wheatley also said the government intended to release information from the business case after determining which details required redaction to avoid affecting the tender process.

Please Mr. Minister DO NOT GO ON WITH THAT extension to the west. It is a waste of money. The bigger planes will not be able to use it to land. Just take off. I will be sending you professional advice from our UK company shortly.

So the leadership says they have received two bids of unspecified value from unspecified contractors bidding on a project the specifications of which don’t appear to be public. Not what anyone would describe as transparent. This fact free announcement is intended to achieve what?

How many of the invited contractors (is there a list?) did not submit a bid? That in itself says something.

no disclosure of bids, or amounts, so why waste world wide web space with an empty story

  6. Bishop says:

They can’t name the two proposed bidders because they are the government’s favourite croonies. They are going to give this contract to one of their physcophants who has no experience and the extension will be a waste because it will be dangerous for planes to land. Civil Engineers and Aeronautical Engineers are needed to study and assess the topography of the land and other mitigating factors like enviromental factors as well as financial implications not known to a novice or layman. Well of course the financual implications don’t matter once they get their kick backs. This government is a joke. Please fellow Virgin Islanders let us get rid of Natalio and his government

This is a waste of time and money . Extending the western end of the airport makes no sense , if you going to do something extend it 1000 more feet south east . For who doesn’t know , that’s the part going towards virgin Gorda
