Two of 14 juveniles re-offend
Minister responsible for youth and prison Myron Walwyn has disclosed that, of all juveniles who have accessed the government’s Restorative Justice Programme so far, only two have re-offended.
The initiative, which was launched in 2013, provides an alternative to incarceration of juveniles who are at the mercy of the Magistrate’s Court.
“The Restorative Justice Programme was implemented with 14 juveniles who were kept out of prison for first-time offences. Only 2 have re-offended since,” Walwyn said during an event at Her Majesty’s Prison this week.
The programme is said to involve a comprehensive approach to rehabilitating at-risk juveniles as well as those who may be charged with an offence.
