Two siblings charged with harbouring
Two more persons have been charged for harbouring prison escapee, Jose Almestica, who was on the run for four years before his recapture a week ago.
Around the time of his recapture, one of Almestica’s reported girlfriends, 26-year-old Jennifer Smith, was charged with harbouring the prisoner.
The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) announced this morning that two siblings have now been implicated.
“Last Wednesday, siblings Renee Smith, 33, of Hannah’s Estate, and Shamal Smith, 41, of Fort Hill were also charged for harbouring the same prisoner. Both are scheduled to appear before the Magistrate’s Court today,” the RVIPF stated.
They are not siblings of Jennifer, the RVIPF stated.
In the meantime, the charge of harbouring a prisoner carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.
Thirty-three-year-old Almestica was apprehended last Tuesday after escaping from Her Majesty’s Prison at Balsam Ghut in 2017 during Hurricane Irma.
