UK agency to provide report on making BVI waters safer

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley said the BVI is set to receive a report from the United Kingdom (UK) that will assist the territory in making its waters safer.

Following the boat accident in October that left a woman and a 6-year-old girl dead, Premier Wheatley said he has met with the UK agency responsible for investigating marine accidents.

He said the agency will provide a report on the lessons that the BVI can learn from that accident to improve safety on the water.

On the evening of October 2, the territory was rocked by news that a boat with 10 people on board had capsized in waters off the western end of Tortola.

The body of a 6-year-old girl was recovered on the night of the accident and some 36 hours later, the body of 30-year-old Kristal Black was found.

The Virgin Islands Search and Rescue team, the US Coast Guard, St John Rescue and numerous good samaritans participated in the search.

    So simple

Boaters, especially belongers must hold a boat license in order to operate a vessel. Too many idiots out there who don’t know how to handle their boat. They are drunk, high, overloaded, and have no safety gear on board. It’s just utterly incomprehensible and sad.

    Step up BVI.

  4. Long Been Happening says:

In the past 20 years there have been lives lost from boating accidents that occur at night.

What is the common denominator? Apart from not having a valid license, there’s being inebriated with alochol or other substance, no life jackets in use, speed, and carelessness.

curfew during the pandemic in 2020 stopped all night time boat traffic and accidents. Just do the same yea round. No private vessels underway in BVI waters from sunset to sunrise every night. Only licensed commercial ferries and water taxis allowed to operate from sunset to sunrise.

  6. Curfew didn't stop boats says:

The curfew did NOT stop the boats. We heard them every night after sunset. Racing through the water in complete darkness.
However they didn’t cause any accidents as far as I’m aware, but the curfews did not stop those fast moving vessels.

    @ Jim

And we don’t need UK to make this happed…….LOL UK got to be scratching their heads with this one.

  10. What a thing says:

Curse the UK when you want and then go begging cap in hand in the other instance.

  11. Enforcement says:

Agree. But also need to enforce existing laws. The marine police can not even write a ticket for safety violations. Plus, the Magistrate seems to only be interested in prosecution of off island people…need the same rules for all, or boat safety laws don’t work!

  13. Obvious. says:

There’s no reason why boating safety cannot be required as part of high school education. We live on an island. While we’re at it, teach everyone to swim. Start with that.
