UK gifts Fire and Rescue Service with 16 defibrillators

The Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service has been gifted with 16 much-needed life-saving defibrillators from the United Kingdom.

The devices, which are used to aid someone suffering from cardiac arrest, were handed over by Governor John Rankin who was joined by Minister of Transportation, Works and Utilities Kye Rymer.

The equipment was donated by Scotland Fire and Rescue Service. Several charities in the United Kingdom, worked in conjunction with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to transport the defibrillators to the Virgin Islands.

Governor Rankin said the donation was a great example of collaboration between the UK Fire Services and the Virgin Islands.

“I want to thank all those involved. These defibrillators were donated by Scotland Fire and Rescue Service, but the arrangement stems from a long-standing relationship between Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service that was formed in the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria. I am pleased that the relationship is still thriving today and has helped provide this lifesaving equipment,” Rankin said.

Meanwhile, Rymer expressed his gratitude for the equipment on behalf of the government and also described the exercise as a proud moment.

“We are happy to receive this kind of donation and understand the importance of these defibrillators at the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service. The minister shared that it is a timely donation for the department as they are now undertaking cardiac training.”

“We appreciate the 16 defibrillators, and we are happy to maintain the relationship that was forged from the 2017 hurricanes between the fire services. Thank you on behalf of the Government and fire department,” Rymer said.

Chief Fire Officer, Zebalon McLean, also expressed gratitude on behalf of his officers for the donation.

“This donation is the latest of many given to the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service by organisations in the UK. The defibrillators will help to save lives; my officers and I are keen to get them into service as soon as possible,” Chief McLean stated.

Thank you very much UK. We are lucky to be an OT. Imagine the state we’d be in if we weren’t, with entirely unsupervised governance. The social security fund would be gone in no time.

I’m not a negative person but have learned a lot during the COvid era. Are these life-saving defibrillators from the United Kingdom because of the sudden death incidence happening globally? Are these life-saving defibrillators from the United Kingdom because of the Sudden high rise in heart issues being experienced globally? One has to question the timing. since late 2020 into 2021 and the eeh em roll out there has been a massive increase in heart issues. One can try to debunk it in many ways but the proof is out there every day we listen to the obituaries.

Seems strange how out of all the equipment the Fire & Rescue Service needs, sixteen defibrillators is somehow a priority?
It says ‘much needed’ how many heart attacks are the Fire Service planning to be attending?
Beyond that, did they do any research to see what kind of defibrillators work best for here, like what are VISAR and the Ambulance using?

Put one at Myetts. Since there are no lifeguards at Cane, the spot where tourists get pulverized by high surf is right by Myetts.
