UK OT’s Minister to visit BVI in November

UK Overseas Territories Minister Stephen Doughty and Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley announced that he looks forward to welcoming UK Overseas Territories Minister Stephen Doughty to the Virgin Islands in early November and introducing him to the people of the territory.

Premier Wheatley said he met with Minister Doughty yesterday, September 11, and engaged in a meaningful discussion, highlighting their perspectives on critical matters.

Before leaving for his recent UK trip, the Premier disclosed that he and Governor Daniel Pruce would provide a comprehensive update to the OT’s Minister on implementing the Commission of Inquiry (COI) recommendations and ongoing governance reforms in the territory.

According to the Premier, the implementation process has seen significant progress, with 46 out of 48 recommendations completed as of August 30.

The discussion was expected to focus on the remaining recommendations, the timeline for their completion, and the overall commitment to governance reform.

Premier Wheatley also indicated that he would seek clarity on the review process and the timeline for lifting the Order in Council, which has been a point of contention.

During his visit, the Premier also met with Baroness Brown of Cambridge, Chair of the Adaptation Committee, to discuss the climate challenges facing the territory.

He highlighted the need for the UK government to recognise the increased vulnerability to storms and rainfall caused by climate change. Baroness Brown offered support in securing UN climate change funding and advancing risk assessments for greater climate resilience.

Let’s have a public meeting and really let him meet the people and listen to our concerns. That would be a huge step in the movement towards accountability and transparency.

The ‘People’ that will turn up to the meetings are just vicious and silly because of their personal greivances. They are not genuinely concerned about the BVI. Many people are interested in crushing the Premier of the BVI, not helping the BVI, there is a big difference. I disagree with a lot of things that the Government is doing but I’m not rooting for them to fail. We need to be offering solutions and trying to be genuinely involved in the betterment of the Territory. Attending meetings, posting blogs, complaining and still going to the polls every 4 years to vote for incompetent people is a craziness and t his is what is happening in the BVI!

More UK people than the UK OT minister will be visiting the BVI in November. These UK ‘visitors’ will be here for many many years for the reform period.
