UN Decolonisation group to assess BVI

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has announced that the United Nations (UN) Special Committee on Decolonisation (C-24) is getting ready to visit the BVI for an assessment of the territory’s readiness for further self-determination.

The Premier said his government requested the visit and is working with the UN to determine the exact dates of the visit. The United Kingdom also approved the official visit.

The C-24 Group is the UN Group that is specially devoted to decolonization.

Premier Wheatley said the public should note that a C-24 Visiting Mission is one of the most important functions of the C-24, adding that the purpose of such missions are to ascertain the situation of the people of the territory, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions on decolonisation, self-determination and the achievement of a full measure of self-government.

“Following the Visiting Mission, a report is completed and presented to the territory, administering powers, C-24-Committee members and the wider UN for consideration. In the case of the Virgin Islands, the Visiting Mission this year will be timely as the people of the Virgin Islands consider our constitutional future,” Premier Wheatley announced.

The leader said the C-24’s approval of the Visiting Mission is a testament to the BVI’s consistent engagement with the UN and lobbying efforts globally. And he said the BVI has built a strong relationship with the UN on matters pertaining to self-determination as well as sustainable development and climate resilience.

In recent times – amid tense relations with the United Kingdom – Premier Wheatley has engaged the UN on several occasions, asking them to support the BVI in its quest to prevent the UK from taking control of the territory’s administration.

Premier Wheatley has stated that any attempt to take over the BVI would go against the principles of the C-24, which was established to ensure that the remaining non-self governing territories of the world, work towards decolonisation.

So fear of UK taking over administrative duties has cause the asking of help from the UN in hopes that the UN would persuade the UK into allow the BVI independence? Again I will ask what would BVI independence look like?

Natalio Wheatley You and your brother better off giving up this fight. You said the BVI has built a strong relationship with the UN on matters pertaining to self-determination as well as sustainable development and climate resilience you mean that you and your brother has built a strong relationship with the UN on matters pertaining to self-determination as well as sustainable development and climate resilience. You want more control so you can dip into the taxpayers money well it’s not going to happen, if that was to happen the trust companies would be gone and a lot of other companies would be gone so think about it you would have less money to spend on your concerts and your world travels. People of the BVI we need to take this man out of office now he is a danger to the British Virgin Islands, he is for himself family and friends. Since he has been in office I can’t see one thing he has done to make the BVI a better place to live. Remember our taxes would be so high only the rich will be able to live in the BVI. My plead to the UK please take us over and shut this man down he has no respect for UK he thinks he can do what he wants and get away with it, don’t let the UN control you UK.

  4. Really??? says:

“ The Premier said his government requested the visit.” But the premier and his government (and his “special envoy”) have no mandate from the electorate/the people to do so. Meanwhile the country is falling apart – fix the roads, fix the sewage problems, rising crime, public health, schools, etc, etc

I agree. We need a referendum on independence. That has been his belief all the time. In the early 2000 he was introduced to me as a fighter for BVI’s independence. He perhaps think, that he can introduce it through the back door?

The Premier seems to want to cherry pick the UN policies to suit his objectives. He should be careful that they do not backfire and that the UN does not look into the treatment of foreign workers.

  8. GPM says:

This is concerning…. We are no where close to being responsible enough to be independent. Independence should not be considered with this level of corruption we have.

Look at the current state of the country. Barely drivable roads, dysfunctional schools, no existence of consumer protection(which every politician benefits from one way or another), The list goes on.

We are not ready for independence. I am not sure what picture they are really paining for these UN Officers to see but I pray they see through the smoke.

With a former Premier in prison for drug trafficking and institutionalized government corruption already, as revealed by the CoI, Haiti shows us our future as an independent country.

    No tourism
    No financial services

    Drugs one way
    Guns the other way.

    No thanks.

  12. Irony? says:

Does anybody else see the irony / contradiction / hypocrisy (take your pick) in asking an unelected conglomerate of foreign politicians with absolutely no interest in the BVI to determine whether the BVI is capable of self determination?

Surely one of the fist acts of self determination is to make one’s own decisions?

  13. Our survey said says:

If they ever get to ask Joe public on the street [no chance in hell] about independence there unlikely to get the woke answer they’re obviously expecting .
