UN hears about recent heavy rains in BVI

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatly recently spoke at the United Nations C-24 Substantive Session where he highlighted the recent heavy rains that battered the territory as he renewed his calls for climate change funding for the BVI and other small island developing states.

“Excellencies, this is the second extreme weather event we have had to endure in five weeks. In early May, we also had torrential rains and flash floods that affected our infrastructure, particularly roads,” the Premier told the UN group.

He added: “Presently, we are locked out of climate finance, which is unjust. Climate justice demands that we be given access to concessional financing and grants based on our vulnerability to help us build our climate resilience to cope with the negative impacts of climate change on our societies. We need UN support and that of the administering powers to help address this critical issue. The same can be said for sustainable development.”

The Premier also used the opportunity to tell the UN that his government was pleased with the latest COI review done by Governor Daniel Pruce. He said it was a balanced review that gave the elected government more time to implement the good governance reforms.

But Premier Wheatley told the UN group that he is still opposed to the UK Order in Council that threatens to suspend the BVI constitution.

“This is not in good keeping with the spirit of a modern partnership. My administration will continue to encourage the UK government to lift the order without delay. The UK position remains that the order will be lifted when the governance reform programme is completed, whereas we believe there should be no prerequisite to doing so if there is a genuine desire for partnership,” the territory’s leader stated.

Though some residents believe the Premier’s frequent trips to UN meetings are unnecessary and reap no result, the leader continues to attend UN meetings, where he advocates for greater self-determination for the BVI and for other issues affecting the territory.

If you employed qualified engineers to design infrastructure in the BVI instead of giving contracts to friends and cronies we wouldn’t need “climate financing”. St Thomas had the same rains and you don’t see them up begging at the UN.

    Agreed! Well said.
A simple maintenance schedule would mitigate much of the damage.
Also, Locked Out? Grants and loans call for accountability and oversight, terms our government refuses to accept…so there’s that.

Did the hon. Premier tell the UN what happened to the billions of government revenue paid in since the 1980s; or what emerged from the CoI?

” where he advocates for greater self-determination for the BVI and for other issues affecting the territory” Such as give me money and we want to be independent.

We were offered a very large loan at never again rates from the UK to help us rebuild our infrastructure after Irma, but this exact government did not want to be accountable for how they spent the loan and here we are now.

A retired UK “Resident”, probably currently here engaging in espionage the hawk, the. Sparrow and the envious watchman for the territory’s money?
