The government and Sir Richard Branson’s Unite BVI this week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will see the elevation of the education system locally.

Education Minister Sharie de Castro said with the new agreement, there will be a focus on infrastructure, professional development, and resources in the territory’s education sector.

During the signing ceremony for the MOU, de Castro said the partnership with Unite BVI started when the non-profit fully funded and executed significant renovations at the Francis Lettsome Primary School and the Enis Adams Primary School.

Later on, the charity helped renovate the Althea Scatliffe Primary School.

“Today, these schools stand as more than just structures of learning. They are living proof of what is achievable when the public and private sectors converge. In the face of adversity, we found strength, and in collaboration, we discovered the power to rebuild not just classrooms but hope for a better, safer, and more inspiring future for the students of the Virgin Islands,” de Castro highlighted.

She said since last year, Unite BVI and the government have been working together on a new path forward for education. The collaboration is already reaping results as de Castro said earlier this month — with the help of Unite BVI — a cohort of secondary teachers began a Secondary Certificate in Education programme at the University of the Virgin Islands, in collaboration with the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.

She also shared that Unite BVI has assisted with the procurement of much-needed S.T.E.A.M. resources that will assist with the teaching of robotics, coding, engineering, and artificial intelligence.

The Education Minister also noted that the landmark agreement with Unite BVI led the government to draft a Donation Policy for the Ministry of Education, which will be used for future partnerships with the private sector.

Parents, students and teachers regularly bemoan the state of the education system, saying much more funds need to be pumped into the system in order to improve standards to globally competitive levels. The government has said this is a challenge especially with the many budgetary strains they face as they try to recover from the 2017 hurricanes, COVID-19, and other global shocks.
