Update: Boat captain among 2 charged for gun

The charges were laid after consultation with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Police said two men were charged last Friday after a joint operation by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) and Customs uncovered a high-powered rifle and a quantity of ammunition onboard a cargo vessel.

As was reported earlier today by BVI News Online, the vessel known as Tenacity was registered in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

It was docked at Port Purcell when it was searched and the illegal weapon allegedly seized in January.

Those charged include the 66-year-old boat captain, Lee Martin, who is a native of Trinidad and Tobago. The other accused is 43-year-old Mitchell Warren from St Vincent.

The duo is charged with unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

They are still in police custody, and are yet to be brought before the Magistrate’s Court.

According to the RVIPF, the charges were laid after consultation with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Commissioner of Police Michael Matthews has expressed delight that another “dangerous, high-powered weapon has been taken off the streets”.
