UPDATE: One dead, another charged in separate shootings
The following is a media release from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).
Officers of the Major Crime Team are piecing together the circumstances which led to the fatal wounding of a man late last night near to the Greenland Cricket Field.
Officers of the Armed Response Team and the East End Division arrived at the scene just before 11pm and found Jason Potter Jr., 22, of Greenland on the ground unresponsive.
He was later pronounced dead. This latest homicide followed the laying of charges against a male in a separate shooting incident outside a Long Bush bar over the weekend (July 30).
In this incident, Reaquan Garraway, 18, of Mount Healthy was charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, carrying a firearm without a license and unlawful possession of explosives in relations to a shooting incident in Long Bush last Saturday morning that left at least one, a female bystander, with injuries.
Commissioner of Police Mark Collin is asking for the public’s help in identifying those who are in possession of firearms in order to prevent any more deaths.
“We are making headway in charging those who are shooting or in possession of guns but this, unfortunately, is not always in time to prevent injury or the loss of life. We need the public’s assistance in identifying persons who are keeping or carrying these deadly weapons. The next life saved could be yours or a loved one close to you,” he noted.
Witnesses in the last night’s homicide or with information into persons in possession of illegal guns are asked to contact the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 368-9339.

Many turned a blind eye as guns and drugs were smuggled into the BVI over the years and now, those guns are being used to destroy our once peaceful community. What is more disturbing is that these HEARTLESS criminals have no regard for innocent lives and I can say the same thing for those in charge. When someone die, everyone is quick to take pics and post their memories, but once the victim is buried, thats it, nobody remembers them.
What happened to the days when we hit each other two big fists, licked our wounds, and walked away? How did we get here where our disputes ends in death by a gun?
This country has to get this gun violence under control. We are no different than our US neighbors at this point, and thats a shame.
People who are caught with illegal guns need to face the full punishment allowed by law, and these magistrates need to stop watering down their punishment when these people come before them.
While details are lacking here, lets hope this crime gets solved, and the victim gets justice.

Your response demonstrates a problem in perception some of you have here in the BVI. You are looking at numbers. I am thinking of senseless murders. It doesn’t matter the number to me. There is no bragging points in having less numbers. Murder is murder.
These killings are senseless. The same senseless murders happening in the USVI are occurring here. The same senseless gun violence occurring there is happening here. Thats the point.
Some of you take comfort in the numbers. I don’t. One senseless murder is too much. See the larger picture and stop taking comfort in numbers.
The USVI and the BVI are two different countries with two different populations one larger than the other, yet the same senseless gun violence is occurring in both countries. Thats the comparison you need to wrap your head around.

With every fight or disagreement now a days there’s a gun looming in the back ground.
Blame the UK. Blame the government for not putting heat on the police & governor responsible for security. Its as if they dont want to stop the problem but allow it to continue another day and we forget until the next shooting.
Same way they are not on the road watching traffic or watching the cycles pop wheeles and burnt out they are not on the streets doing anything of substance for US in the virgin islands only pandering to the USA definition of a drug war.
When someone lives with too much money we are all happy to celebrate life with them.

some young children want to stay in school and learn but they will feel bad if they fail a subject in previous term but pass it in the last one why are they were not promoted when they improve in the last term? This can lead some of them to drop out of school and to do other things and not school work. At 18 there are still some kids who are in college. Give the young children a chance promote them and they will not be drop out but take their education and be a good to the society. If there are others like this young man I pray they give up the guns and go school.

Police, parents, husbands, wives, aunts, uncles, etc… Aren’t perfect.
