UPDATE: Queen Elizabeth II dies at age 96
Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96.
Buckingham Palace said in a statement moments ago: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
Queen Elizabeth II was Britain’s longest-serving monarch whose final public duty happened two days ago when she accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson and invited Liz Truss, the new Prime Minister, to form a government.
Her Majesty died after being placed under medical supervision at Balmoral, her Scottish residence, following a medical evaluation.
Buckingham Palace had said in a previous statement today: “Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.”
The monarch has been on summer holiday at Balmoral since late July. She has suffered from mobility issues in recent times with recent pictures of her meeting with Truss showing her with a walking cane.
She served a 70-year reign as monarch of the United Kingdom.
Queen Elizabeth II is expected to be succeeded by her eldest son Prince Charles.
