UPDATE: Two in custody following boat chase, drug bust

Scenes from the vessel that reportedly ran aground near the eastern end of Tortola this morning. (photo provided)

Two persons are now in custody following a joint operation that resulted in the recovery of a “significant amount” of a substance police said they believe to be cocaine.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) said in a brief statement this morning that the joint operation was between its officers and US federal agents.

The operation involved both air and marine access from both agencies and culminated this morning with a boat chase that ended on Long Bay, Beef Island.

The cocaine was seized along with a speed boat.

Heavily armed officers were observed patrolling the beach at Long Bay early this morning in what appeared to be a manhunt for the suspects involved in the drug incident.

A helicopter with a spotlight was seen hovering in the East End area between 3 am and 4 am on Tuesday, May 9.

Amateur video footage and photographs sent to our news centre shows police surrounding a vessel which reportedly ran aground on Beef Island.

The police have not released the identities of the persons in custody.

Looks like potential drug runners beached their boat in an attempt to flee the police who were hot in their tails.

We shall see what becomes of this.

  4. TimTom says:

Why beach at Beef Island – there is only the bridge to get to Tortola and not so many places to hide. Surely even our keystone cops can find the feast of them.

Desperate times calls for desperate measures. When the police are chasing after you by sea in the darkness with helicopter circling in tow, any land will do.

Gives you a chance to run and hide. I think they had few options under pursuit. Ditching where they did gave them plenty opportunity to hide in the bushes and escape under the cover of darkness.

The good news here is that the police are awake and apparently going about doing their jobs.

Looks like they are searching very hard. Well done RVIPF, you can stand toe-to-toe with the PWD.

…out on bail by weekend. The judicial system is a farce. These guys will be out on bail and back on the job by a week’s time. Those with government jobs will be put on ‘Administrative Leave’ and collecting their salaries all courtesy of the BVI tax payers. Yet not one of these ‘enlightened’ politicians and senior government bureaucrats see this as an issue.

Get held with a gun; bail and out on the streets to continue as usual. Don’t you all see a problem with the judicial system here? I mean wtf…this sh!t is like a fairy tale story; can’t be a real world place…

  15. But….. says:

It says Beef Island. What’s your problem?

  16. The real farce says:

No one seems to have given any thought to or have any real plan for what will replace the lost income and employment which the BVI currently enjoys from the trafficking industry.

The fact that this needs thought given to it may be a harsh reality that few seem prepared to accept (harsh, that is, assuming one holds the view that the drug trade is morally wrong by virtue of its illegality in the same rich, western countries whose citizens’ demand for drugs necessitates the trade in the first place). But it’s a reality which needs to be accepted if anyone is actually desirous of resolving any wider issue.

The real farce is continued counter-trafficking operations with no or insufficient thought being given to this reality, i.e. how and from where will the benefits which the BVI receives – rightly or wrongly – from the drug-trafficking industry be replaced if that industry is eliminated.

Should the BVI police be successful in eliminating the trafficking industry from the BVI – ostensibly its goal – then congratulations to the Commissioner and friends for their victory in the d**k-swinging contest and good luck to the residents of the BVI for what will be a newfound intimacy with violent crime and petty theft.

Speak for yourself. You might be a drug dealer but I know for sure I ain’t none. I satisfied and happy with the nothing I have and that dirty money don’t bother me. I don’t have a car, it’s ok. I catch the government shuttle and ride up and down with Yellow. Some of you do whatever you got to do for material things. Getting up everyday and doing a 9 to 5 Job for $80.00 a day might seem cruel, I just don’t spent more than I make. Sometimes if viena sasage, sometime is chicken back. Thankful

I wonder if the helicopter has thermal imaging on it, in which case you are screwed if you hide in the bush. Would be better off jumping in the mangroves or hiding under the bridge, under the water with a straw for air.
