Urgent fix needed in education! Past minister ‘extremely concerned’

Myron Walwyn

Former Education Minister Myron Walwyn has said an urgent fix is needed for apparent issues that have arisen in the BVI’s Education system.

“I am extremely concerned!” Walwyn said in a Facebook post last evening.

“Whatever issues we are having that are affecting the educational pursuits of our children, let us get them fixed urgently,” the former National Democratic Party chairman and two-term legislator said.

Walwyn’s concerns come on the heels of news that there are to be no further face-to-face classes for junior students at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) for the remainder of the academic term.

“Parents, guardians and students are reminded that there will be no more face-to-face sessions for grades 7-9 (Junior) for the remainder of the term,” a brief post on the school’s RAMS Media Group Facebook page noted.

According to the post, classes and end-of-term assessments for the junior high students will continue through the various online learning platforms for the rest of the term.

In early May, just at the beginning of the new school term, a planned shift system was suddenly and abruptly cancelled with little notice and no explanation at the time to ESHS students and parents.

Furthermore, the current Education Minister, Dr Natalio Wheatley said persons are trying to mislead others about the state of the reconstruction of the school.

“There are some persons out there who are genuinely frustrated, and they mean well, but there are other persons out there who have agendas, and who are seeking to mislead people,” Dr Wheatley said last month on the VIP’s Let’s Talk radio show.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” the Minister insisted in response to persons who are alleging that nothing is being done to rebuild the main campus at ESHS.

“It’s dangerous to speak about things when you do not have the facts,” Dr Wheatley added.

The main campus of the Elmore Stoutt High School had been severely damaged since the 2017 hurricanes. But repairs were started and completed on the L-shaped building on the campus to accommodate junior students.

There are always advantages and disadvantages in surprises. Let the people know what your plans are and who are the members of your team. Please form a shadow government and allow them to address issues affecting the territory. Let us see their performance early so that we can have confidence in your team. Do it for the love of country. I do really believe that a lot of the pool is really tainted, and void of real plans. I implore you to search among the business community, involve some young college grads even if you need to look outside the territory. Bring a fresh team. Here you come with the untruths. What is wrong with some of you people? Could all the schools be fixed all at once after the hurricanes? Myron fixed as much as could be fix during the time between the hurricane and election. The VIP has been in government longer than that time and have not fixed one school yet. What have they fixed? They are taking credit for ESHS but all of us who worked on that project know that they are being untruthful again. Former Minister Walwyn thanks for your voice on this. People in the BVI do not know when to put politics on the side in the interest of their country. The BVI education system is in shambles. It is. Regardless of which party you support it is a complete and utter disaster and the government of the day should be held responsible and accountable for our children’s education. How could some of you come on and play politics when the future of your country is threatened by what is happening? Do BVI people know what it means to put country first? Do BVI people know how to put country before party? Do BVI people know how to show love for their country? What the former minister is saying is the truth. Instead of trying to drag him down or prop up your badly performing political party, speak to the government representatives about improving the quality of education for our children. Put down your selfishness for once and think about your country. This country has some of the most selfish people I have ever met and I have lived in many countries around the world. You cannot just love a country for what you can get. Some of you don’t even care about your own family members once you get what you want. It is time to change that outlook. Support what is good and right for your home regardless of who is in the government. The former minister spoke out about because he cares. Each of you should do the same and bring about change.

Boss you don’t know what you talking about. Stop lying. The NDP government negotiated the re-build of all the new schools we have after the hurricane – Enis Adams Primary School, Robinson O’Neal, Ivan Dawson, BFEC secondary school. It’s was the NDP that did all that work not the VIP. They did the lion share of the work on the ESHS building – the now government taking credit for work they did not do. The NDP government did repairs to all schools that were not completely destroyed. Our children were back in school by October after the hurricane. The BVI was top in the OECS for CXC for the second year in a row after the hurricane. The situation in all the schools were not perfect and could not be perfect in such a short time but our children were school and they were learning. Every step of the way parents were informed of what was happening. I was tired hearing Myron voice updating the public on what was happening. We need to stop being so untruthful in the BVI.
