USVI cop killed by murder suspect out on bail

As the BVI continues to reel from a daring daylight armed robbery on a business at the Cyril B Romney Tortola Pier Park, the neighbouring US Virgin Islands (USVI) is mourning the loss of a police officer who was shot and killed earlier this week by a man who is awaiting trial for murder.

The 42-year-old detective, Delberth Phipps Jr, was gunned down in the line of duty on St Thomas. He is the first USVI cop to die in the line of duty since 2012.

The 51-year-old man who shot the cop is set to return to court in February 2024 to stand trial for the murder of another man.

According to reports, the deceased detective was among a group that was called to a location where the suspect was seen walking with a high-powered gun.

When the group of officers got to the scene, the suspect engaged them in a shootout where Officer Phipps was shot. He later died at the hospital. BVI News understands that the shooter also sustained injuries and is now in police custody.

Governor Albert Bryan Jr said he is saddened by the loss of the officer, adding that the tragic incident is a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily.

The officer’s death marks the 23rd homicide in the USVI since the start of the year.

  5. @Confused says:

The man who shot the police was on bail for killing another man earlier this year. He was on bail waiting for his trial for that murder when he shot the police.
    Hope this helps.

  6. Truth says:

The suspect killed a man in Feb. and claimed self-defence. He had a licenced firearm and was out on bail. Somebody saw him walking in Jah yard with a gun and called the police and we know the rest. The question is, #1 if that man killed somebody did they give him a psycho-evaluation upon release earlier this year? It’s not easy when you end another’s life. #2 It is said he was wearing a bulletproof vest. Would this mean he was paranoid concerning some type of retaliation? #3 When the cops approached were they easily identifiable as cops or could he in his paranoia mistaken them as aggressors?
