VG healthcare moves to temporary site amid clinic reopening delay

The Iris Nurse O’Neal Medical Centre on Virgin Gorda.

The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) has moved its healthcare services on Virgin Gorda to a temporary site due to the extended closure of the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic, which was impacted by Tropical Storm Ernesto just over a week ago.

Clinic services have been relocated to the second floor of the Vanterpool Administrative Building in the Valley on the sister island.

In an advisory on Friday, August 23, the BVIHSA announced that the temporary location will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While the authority did not specify the days of operation, the public can call 284-440-1661 for more information.

The health authority also stated that home care services will continue as normal for the North Sound community. Residents are asked to call 284-340-2045 for emergencies.

The BVIHSA initially announced the temporary closure of the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic on August 16 due to low voltage issues caused by TS Ernesto, which required the facility to shut down temporarily for repairs.

Although electricity has been restored to the clinic, the BVIHSA has indicated that new issues have arisen.

According to their press release, airflow concerns have emerged due to a faulty air conditioning system and water ingress, necessitating the continued closure of the clinic.

The community has been informed that a deep cleaning has already been completed at the facility, and the only obstacle to reopening the clinic is the air conditioning system, as its parts are not locally sourced.

BVIHSA electrical technicians are working to resolve the clinic’s remaining issues to ensure it is reopened as soon as possible. However, the BVIHSA has not provided a firm date for reopening.

  6. Need a Trauma Center... says:

Virgin Gorda needs real medical care!
This clinic is about as good as my high school nurse. Great to go to if you need a Paracetamol, but no help if you are really in crisis.
The only ‘medical’ help is VISAR. At least they show up where the problems are and take you to Tortola where there is an operating room…but if you are really in trouble, you are already dead.
This medical care is crucial if we want tourism to be our economic driver over the next 20 years. INVEST in this! Forget about the airport and other nonsense.

  7. As much as it hurts me to say this says:

We does cast blame on everything except poor management and maintenance. But same way if you struggling to pay the light bill I don’t expect you to maintain the generator either. Things can’t continue like this.

  11. Great fanfare says:

This building was just built less than 4years now and a storm cause a closure of the building.
Was there no considerations given to our regular hurricane visits in designing and building this clinic. Just imaging if we had a category 2 hurricane. This is how government waste money and they keep using the same contractor over and over.
Our great hospital built on Tortola less than ten years is now leaking also. Same contractor. It does not adds up.
