VG’s poor sewerage state not far from EE/LL — Flax-Charles

Territorial At-Large Representative Shereen Flax-Charles has protested the state of sewerage disposal in Spanish Town on the sister island of Virgin Gorda, arguing that things cannot continue to be done in isolation in the territory.

The first-term legislator painted a visual picture of the dire state of effluent treatment when she raised the issue in the House of Assembly recently.

“Imagine, one of the most expensive but most beautiful restaurants on Virgin Gorda. You go there, two persons, by the time you swing around, you spend $300 two of you, and you have to be inhaling things that are not coming out of the kitchen because Spanish Town needs a sewerage treatment plant,” she said.

Flax-Charles, who is also a calypsonian, recalled that she previously sang a song about the diversion of $8 million dollars from the East End/Long Look sewerage treatment project, which has left residents of the Seventh and Eighth Districts fuming for years.

“Quite a few of us went out on the Ritz-Carlton ship that came in. We all were happy. It fits in with the image and the demographics of our high-end clientele that comes to the BVI,” Flax-Charles stated. “And guess what? Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda is not far away from where East End and Long Look is right now, when it comes to sewerage.”

According to the Junior Minister for Trade and Economic Development, there is no sign of any movement on the government’s part to address the vexing issue. “There’s nothing, zero, not even a plan in the budget to rectify this situation or to start the process,” Flax-Charles protested.

She also dismissed critics who might argue that she is only talking about issues happening on Virgin Gorda.

The lawmaker pointed out that the territory’s islands are interconnected and said issues that happen on Virgin Gorda affect the main island of Tortola. “What happens in Virgin Gorda affects Tortola, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada. So whenever I get the opportunity – it might not be what people want to hear – but we know that these things are needed in this country,” she added.

Isn’t that your job Shereen? You campaigned on fixing the problems and now you are complaining about them? It was your responsibility to make sure that your government fixed the problem. You said that you and Vincent would work together to help VG. The two of you spent the time cussing each other and undermining each other and nothing got done but now you making excuses?

Sewerage management in the BVIs-all islands- is 3rd world. Worse yet, there is no plan to do anything about it. Making it better would require taking serious stock of the situation, but that in turn would mean finding out, and accepting, that many if not most septic systems are deficient. That would require home owners to spend money they don’t want to, if nothing else, because who is qualified to do a proper job around here? Our topography limits options for waste water treatment plants, which require large investments (which always go over budget hereabouts) of money we don’t have. Running such requires maintenance and upkeep few want to take seriously. So, we flush and do nothing while the territory literally goes to s**t.

Notice the only time they remember VG has a sewage problem is when it’s an election year. Meanwhile, watch and see nothing happens but a bunch of promises. Sewerage management is third-world because they don’t really care and those they have managing don’t have a clue.

Who dug up the Lee Road down by the well and put in an illegal drain and then did a crap job of fixing the road?
