VI native Dame Janice Pereira appointed to Privy Council

Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Dame Janice Pereira

Former Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC), Dame Janice Pereira, has been appointed to His Majesty’s Privy Council.

The prestigious appointment, approved by the King, acknowledges her exemplary service and marks another historic milestone in her distinguished career.

In yesterday’s announcement, the King also approved the appointment of First Minister of Wales, Baroness Eluned Morgan, and First Minister of Scotland, John Swinney, to His Majesty’s Privy Council.

Dame Pereira, who hails from Virgin Gorda in the BVI, has long been a trailblazer in the legal field. She made history as the first female Chief Justice of the ECSC, a role she has held since 2012. Throughout her tenure, she has been instrumental in modernising the court system, particularly through implementing digital justice platforms. These innovations have ensured the continued accessibility and efficiency of the judicial system, even in the face of challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Privy Council, one of the oldest judicial institutions in the United Kingdom, serves as the final court of appeal for many Commonwealth countries, including those in the Eastern Caribbean. Membership in the Privy Council is a highly esteemed position reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service in public life. As a member, Dame Janice will provide legal advice to the Sovereign and contribute to decisions on matters of importance across the Commonwealth.

Dame Janice’s career is marked by numerous accolades. She was awarded the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of her services to the judiciary. Additionally, she has received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of the West Indies, further highlighting her significant impact on the legal profession in the Caribbean.

Don’t know how many understand the magnitude of this appointment. This is bigger news than Usain Bolt being the fastest man in the world!!! Congrats Dame Janice Pereira.

Congratulations for such a clever person. But, is this the same Privy Council that according to Natalio the people of the VI no longer will to have anything to do with.

Natalio may have a different view as she joins the Colonial Masters that continue to wield their racist powers over us.

But I say congratulations. Most of the institutions of the UK are respected around the world. only our own HOA of the VI lead by a certain criminal now a resident of Miami for a good few years think differently.
