Jamaican dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel has arrived in the territory for the highly anticipated Black on Black concert, set for Saturday, March 15.

News of his performance has sparked mixed reactions—some expressing excitement over its potential economic benefits, while others have condemned the government for supporting the event due to Kartel’s controversial past.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was released from a Jamaican prison in 2024 after serving thirteen years. His murder conviction was overturned by the UK’s Privy Council.

Meanwhile, the BVI Christian Council (BVICC) issued a statement on Friday, March 7, strongly criticizing the government’s financial backing of the concert. While acknowledging that it was too late to stop the event, the BVICC urged the Premier to refrain from funding similar events in the future.

“We informed the Premier, in no uncertain terms, of our disappointment in the government’s financial support of the Vybz Kartel concert, as the messaging of this activity directly contravenes our Christian principles and greatly impacts our cultural and moral trajectory,” the BVICC stated.

Concert promoter Parillon defended the event, emphasizing its significance as Kartel’s first performance outside of Jamaica in over 13 years. He has projected significant profits for businesses across the territory ahead of the upcoming concert.

Other artistes scheduled to perform includes international acts such as Skillibeng and Jah Vinci, along with surprise guest performances.
