Walwyn confirms: Alliance was formed with Skelton’s blessing

From left: Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull, Myron Walwyn, Stacy Mather.

Yet another member of the Alliance has confirmed that the group’s formation was not a betrayal of former Opposition Leader Ronnie Skelton, but instead had his explicit blessing.

During a recent interview with Cindy Rosan, Opposition Leader Myron Walwyn said Skelton gave his blessing when the idea of the Alliance was presented to him, confirming earlier comments by Territorial At-Large Representative Stacy “Buddha” Mather, who had previously said that Skelton, NDP leader Marlon Penn, and At-Large Representative Lorna Smith were aware of their decision to form the Alliance.

Walwyn said the Alliance was born out of necessity, after the opposition’s fragmented structure left them weak and ineffective in the House of Assembly.

He added that the 2023 general election results — which handed the Virgin Islands Party more seats than many expected — were a direct consequence of this disunity. With the NDP and PVIM “in shambles,” Walwyn said he took it upon himself to reunite the parties to bring structure to the Opposition side. But when he presented his idea of an entirely new party to Marlon Penn and Ronnie Skelton, they both rejected it.

Soon after, PVIM members Melvin Turnbull and Mather put forward their own attempt to unite the parties.

“Honourable Turnbull and Honourable Mather went to Honourable Skelton and said to him, ‘we want to go form an Alliance with Myron’… Honourable Skelton gave them his blessing. He did. They came back and told me but I didn’t take their word for it so I went to him (Honourable Skelton). I said, ‘These two gentlemen came to you? He said yes. Walwyn recalled. “I [then] said, are you planning to run again?’ He said no, and these were his exact words: ‘It will take a miracle for me to change my mind to run.’ So we formed an Alliance only to see something different being said, which is reminiscent of what happened to me in 2019,” Walwyn said.

Walwyn’s claim cuts sharply against the narrative that the formation of the Alliance took Skelton by surprise. Many of Skelton’s supporters have accused Walwyn of betrayal and political opportunism. But Walwyn’s version of events suggests that Skelton not only knew of the arrangement but sanctioned it.

In the meantime, Walwyn’s statements have not been countered by Penn or Skelton, who have since formed a refreshed NDP and claim their party is capable of forming the next government when the territory goes to the polls.

  6. Viewpoint says:

My analysis from following all this drama is that Ronnie Skelton is the problem. This is what I see

    1. NDP had an internal election for leadership. Ronnie and Myron ran for leadership. Myron won. Ronnie lost. Ronnie runs off like a spoil brat to form his own party because he lost.

    2. He formed PVIM with Mitch and others and contested the 2019 election. He lost the election and resign as head of PVIM. Mitch and others build back up PVIM, in comes Ronnie just before the 2023 election and say he want to lead the party and wrestle away the leadership for Mitch who was elected the head of the party after he left.

    3. Ronnie then wins back in 2023. He became leader of the opposition. Mather and Mitch could no longer work with him because he was not performing his role well. Myron became leader of the opposition.

    4. Ronnie quickly dissolves PVIM without telling members and run back to NDP and is now fighting Marlon for leadership.

That Dr. Smith send him China so Myron could beat him. What hogwash. Myron was always and continues to be more popular than Ronnie. He would have beaten him whether Ronnie was china, Greenland, Switzerland or here. People need to be gracious in defeat and stop making excuses when they lose. Take your loss like a man. I think Walwyn’s recent rants/statements have solidified why so many people do not want to work with him and are afraid of him being the Premier of this Territory. Smart, witty, eloquent of course, but cunning and cut throat as well it seems. All this airing out of dirty laundry, is it really necessary? You had negotiations with people behind closed doors and you are here leaking out all this information? Why would any potential candidate, backer, supporter trust you with anything sacred with this behavior? State your case, build your team, layout your plans, bring your candidates and let the people decide. All of this negative stuff and he still hasn’t formally resigned from the NDP.

I watched the interview and it was a very good one. Cindy asked some tough questions and Hon. Walwyn answered them. It seems as if the writer of the above post wanted him to lie.
Sometimes in life you have to speak your truth because if you don’t the bad people who spread lies will make you out to be horrible while you keep your mouth quiet and say nothing. I appreciated the candid discussion in the interview and I now have a better understanding of what took place. Myron was believable and I believe him because I have seen the conduct of Skelton for instance in his recent refusal to debate and support the vote of no confidence which he tried to bring when he was opposition leader. It says a lot to me about the type of person he is.
On one final note, since when do political parties in the BVI require people to resign? I doubt any of them have any registration forms to begin with that all their members fill out including candidates. When Ronnie left NDP did he resign? When he came back did he fill out a form seeking membership again? People just leave parties and go elsewhere if they choose. That’s how I know it to be. Here we go again with different rules and requirements based on who the person is. This is the biggest problem we have in this BVI. Our decisions and views are not principled.

BVI news is really milking this interview LOL. Every day it is a different story. It is interesting reading. I see some things clearer now. The NDP never liked Myron. They used him because he was popular and have a way with people and words and he could work. They saw the benefit of that to themselves but the minute he raised his head to go higher he was quickly reminded and continues to be reminded about his parentage.

  19. My Take says:

James 3:16 says “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice.”

The job of the Alliance from day 1 has been to knock down and stamp on Hon. Skelton. A Virgin Islander quietly going about his business and not playing tit for tat with them. Hon. Walwyn is better qualified how? A law degree and an A in Speech 1001 does not make you more qualified. Seems to me if he had good management skills and focus, he would know that time is of the essence and he should be spending time building a team for the next election with whome he should be working to convince persons of their suitability to run this country next election, instead of warring with persons he may need to form a Government, if they are successful. You see he can’t seem to be able to see the forest from the trees. His Alliance busy running a smear campaign when they should be running soemthing else. But time longer than twine. They, all three of them, seem to be sure that the person to attack in this election is Hon. Skelton. He is the threat for that is their concentration while we have a Governmen spending lots of money and not doing a damn thing to move this country forward. He apparently had a problem with Hon. Penn’s leadership but that was not his biggest problem. He apparently continuously looking at Hon. Skelton cockeyed. But destructive behaviour springing from envy always ends in chaos and that is exactly where we are. Hon. Skelton will take this country exactly where we need to go starting day 1. That’s why he is so feared. But carry on. We see you and we understand. Alliance apparently cannot sleep as they consistently have dreams of Hon. Skelton on their mind.

My point exactly, the Alliance came together, three of them and dismantled PVIM. It is gone. Left one man standing in both PVIM and NDP, but it seems like they never have enough. Their job is not done. Head of PVIM and head of NDP came together. They are pissed. Why? They left!! They are the new Alliance. Election is not here yet, but the are throwing daggers and pitch forks at Hon. Skelton every single day. So what do they want next? We will continue to pray for Hon. Skelton because this is not normal. He is not answering. They are blogging bull nonsense. Listen, the headlines daily are confusing. They did their thing. They formed and left Hon. Skelton behind. Wasn’t that their aim? Why are they looking back? Get together, build and win, without him and Hon. Penn. You chose that. What is the problem? You need him further for something? What? You didn’t mean to leave? You are sorry you did? Listen, I can’t understand. I can’t.

Why would I vote for or even believe a man that says he will look out for Virgin Islanders yet does not employ them (or rarely so) when he and his business clearly have the capacity to do so and the need for employees. He speaks well, but lacks credibility. Perhaps you are not a Virgin Islander, because a Virgin Islander wpuld never have probed the relevance of my comment, as they would understood its import from the outset. Enjoy your weekend.
