Walwyn dismayed at Premier’s belated ‘greedy bill’ admission

Walwyn

Former legislator Myron Walwyn has expressed dismay at Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley’s belated admission that the contentious ‘greedy bill’ passed by his Virgin Islands Party (VIP) government was a mistake.

The so-called ‘greedy bill’ is a reference to the Retiring Allowances (Legislative Services) Amendment Act, 2021, a law passed by the Premier’s Virgin Islands Party (VIP) that has received intense backlash from residents over its excesses doled out to lawmakers in a highly suspicious pension scheme.

Walwyn, while speaking with ZBVI radio in an interview yesterday, called Dr Wheatley’s admission “a day late and a dollar short”.

“The real mistake here for [Wheatley] is that the public is now fully aware of the contents of the bill, and have expressed their disdain for what was done,” Walwyn asserted.

According to Walwyn, the VIP administration passed the law and was fully aware of its contents, its effects, and its intention when they passed it.

Several protests greeted the passage of the bill when it was first made public, but the VIP, which had a political majority in the House of Assembly at the time, was unmoved over the public backlash.

Walwyn expressed satisfaction that in bringing awareness to what he described as a “troubling matter“, two other political parties have since pledged to repeal the Act if they are given a chance to govern.

In the meantime, the former Education Minister also expressed abhorrence over the Premier’s conduct after the contents of the Act were “fully brought to the attention of the public”.

“[The premier] indicated that I should not have gone there,” Walwyn argued, “meaning I should not have said anything, which suggests that he clearly did not want the public to know what was contained in the Act.”

He further contended that Dr Wheatley broke Cabinet confidentiality as well as his fiduciary responsibilities as Minister of Finance in providing information that he received in the course of his duties and used it for political purposes.

“This clearly was to cause embarrassment to me for revealing what I saw as an injustice in the second part of the Act,” Walwyn claimed.

Walwyn, I am from district 6 and you know me well. Everyone meaning all legislators including you out of the house were attentive to the bill making and we all now know that you immediately took advantage of the greedy bill by requesting your rightful retirement pension without hesitation.

“It gone cabinet yet?” Is now your motto. Now Premier Sowande is planning to repeal the bill upon being re-elected and that is not a bad idea at all.

What will be an even better idea is when it is repealed, that you pay back the difference of our tax paying dollars to the government coffers.

Pledge that and you will have my vote, it is that simple.

Now done with the back and fort looking political clout with the rhetoric.

Go SIDDUNG! You’re not for the people. Why couldn’t you suggest Government give everybody a maximum $1000, minimum $700 to help with the rising cost of living? Instead your platform is tit for tat. You weren’t dismayed when you were getting the money, but you’re dismayed now. Y’all dishonest and hypocritical with no morals.

  7. Voters, Wake the Hell Up!! says:

It was no mistake. It was and is a calculated, and intentional piece of legislation enacted and passed to enrich themselves..

Their sole motive, as stated during the campaign was to enrich themselves. One of them said so with his own mouth and fingers. And, our voters put the whole booty in their lap..

So, no surprise there. Unfortunately, many are still totally blind and unaware of their in office intentions and actions and will continue to vote for the plunderers.

But some say, that God don’t sleep. Meanwhile, civil servants active and retired alike, have not received a penny of their incerments owed to them after a decade of waiting and suffering. Where are their hearts and soul, compassion and care for for the people and less off? Dead on arrival!!!!!

Politicians/elected officials always do for them selves while taking the voting public for fools, idiots and blind.

It is also believed that Mr. Walwyn, in general human terms, has a good heart and has good intentions for the people and territory, even as he looks out for his bottom line.

We all will do the same there. He has not exhausted his confidence quotient with the masses as yet.

He and one or two others, including from the 9th, have established that they are genuine thinkers for the people and did not shed their humanity when they were elected. And, some of us have recognized, applaud and appreciate that.

As such, Good Human Qualities aand Care for People Always Win.

I believe what we forget, whatever you believe of Myron he was not an elected representative when the bill was passed, he was in John Public, while the current Premier was the then Deputy Premier, so you cannot blame Myron for the bill, this has to fall squarely on the shoulders of the governing body, the Premier was for the bill as he supported every bill that was bought by the now indited Premier. He cannot now try to weasel his way out by blaming others.
This among other things shows his personhood.

How amazing, everyone trying to distance themselves from the Greedy Bill now it’s become public knowledge, but, not before they all voted in favor of it behind closed doors. Clearly it was business as usual for all concerned, which, anyone with half a brain will understand nothing will change for the better from this forthcoming election.

Myron are you going to give your Greedy Bill payout back? Yes or no? That is the bottom line. I don’t want to hear nothing about first part or second part. No vote for you until you confirm. Or are you using that money to fight your court case for corruption in building the high school wall?
