Minister of Education Myron Walwyn has followed through on his promise to donate half of his salary to local educators.
The minister donated a $4,898.14 cheque yesterday during the launch and distribution of the digital textbooks on Virgin Gorda.
“I handed over my cheque from November 1-15 to Pastor Peter De’Abreau yesterday for the Cornerstone School in VG,” Walwyn said.
“As was mentioned before, he offered the use of his school to house Robinson O’Neal Memorial School free of cost. His teachers could have been displaced by this and so the salary goes towards keeping them on to work,” he added.
The education minister, who earns nearly $10,000 monthly, had pledged to donate a portion of his salary to teachers on Virgin Gorda when he was challenged about taking a pay cut recently.
Opposition Leader Andrew Fahie first suggested that government ministers take pay cuts to effectively help recovery efforts.
Walwyn is the only known government minister that has donated a portion of his salary to assist public servants.
