Walwyn says he warned former legislator about ‘corruption claims’

Opposition Leader Myron Walwyn has revealed that he once cautioned a former legislator about making sweeping corruption allegations, warning that such statements could have serious consequences for the BVI.

Walwyn made the disclosure during a recent House of Assembly debate marking the lifting of the Order in Council, where lawmakers reflected on the events that led to the Commission of Inquiry (COI) and the threat of direct United Kingdom rule.

Recounting the encounter, Walwyn said he took the then-legislator aside and urged restraint in how corruption claims were being made against their colleagues in the House of Assembly.

“I remember one time speaking to a member, who became Premier. I took him outside… and I said to him, ‘I know you want to be the Premier of this country, but you have to be careful how you go about it’,” Walwyn told the House. He said he specifically warned that repeatedly branding leaders as corrupt without evidence would damage the territory’s reputation and could ultimately harm its ability to govern itself.

“These allegations that you’re making about corruption, are going to come back to haunt this country. It’s going to put us in a position where we cannot help our own people,” Walwyn said. According to the Opposition Leader, those warnings went unheeded, as political discourse at the time became increasingly dominated by accusations and counter-accusations of corruption.

He pointed to instances where the former legislator continued to brand the NDP administration as “the most corrupt government in history”, but couldn’t defend the claim when he was asked about it during the Commission of Inquiry (COI).

Walwyn argued that this type of political rhetoric contributed to a damaging narrative that extended beyond the territory.

“We get mad when they (the UK) call us corrupt. They’re only repeating what we have been saying about ourselves,” he said.

Walwyn further explained that this environment of heightened allegations and declining public confidence helped explain why some people supported the idea of a UK takeover during the COI period. While noting that those individuals were a minority, he said many residents had genuine concerns about governance and accountability.

“You had a lot of people who were concerned about the governance of the country because some things were done that were not good,” he stated.

According to Walwyn, some members of the public felt that external intervention was necessary to restore accountability, especially in light of controversial decisions and unresolved questions surrounding public funds.

It is funny that every time the UK says we are corrupt, the Premier jumps up to say how out of place and how wrong they are. Yet, when he sat under AF who was saying the very same thing, Premier Wheatley said absolutely nothing!

  7. Alphabet says:

I concur- however; ALL of you cats play the same game and only when caught with your proverbial pants down, do you ALL cry colonialism!

I recall that one former member stated that he owned more companies/trade licenses than letter in the alphabet. This same member shows no apologies to the public for his ‘actions ‘ as he has the sweet mouth and gift of gab while pulling the wool over most people’s eyes and entire heads!

Price control? Landlord and Tenancy Agreement Act? Sex Offenders Registry? Healthcare reform? Nope. None of these will get the advancements they require due to lobbyists and conflicts of interests with many of these ‘elitists’.

Wake up people! The snakes oil salesmen and women will be coming into your homes, businesses and media with golden promises and delicious word salads to entice you to vote for them and their party while they get richer and richer while doing less to nothing!

Wake up and smell the stench….the Alphabet men and women are coming!!! Talking season is here!!!
