Walwyn says he’s ‘batting’ for Rymer on territory’s water worries

Opposition Leader Myron Walwyn recently told the House of Assembly that while he has been forcefully advocating for Works Minister Kye Rymer to get the resources needed to fix the territory’s failing water system, the minister has instead been defending a government that has not provided those resources.

“I am batting for you to get money to fix your problem, and you get up defending the man who ain’t giving you the money, over me who batting for you,” Walwyn said during the debate on the Virgin Islands Energy and Water Corporation Bill, 2026.

Walwyn stressed that his sharp criticism should not be interpreted as a personal attack on the minister, saying his approach reflects an understanding of the pressure Rymer faces daily.

“You are under enormous pressure,” Walwyn said, pointing to frequent pipe bursts and service failures. Referencing a break in Bellevue on the morning of the debate, he added, “Up to this morning, a pipe burst up Bellevue… you are under enormous pressure every day.”

The opposition leader said his objections to the bill are rooted in concerns about funding and timing, not opposition to reform itself.

He also told the House that he has repeatedly raised the infrastructure challenges precisely because he believes the Works Minister needs stronger backing.

“I harass you,” Walwyn said, addressing Rymer directly, “because you have a man over here who understands the pressure you’re under.”

Despite mounting criticism against the speed at which the government is addressing the failing public infrastructure in the society, a number of elected leaders have acknowledged Rymer’s desire to address the challenges.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley and other government and Opposition members have sympathised with Rymer, saying they know he has been trying to obtain much-needed resources to address the issues that fall under his purview.

  2. Fix the water problem says:

How could we be borrowing 100M and not have the water problem in our country fixed after that? That is wild! Walwyn telling them to put more money towards fixing the water problem while Rymer saying he got enough money but admitting that the money he got can’t fix the water problem. Somebody tell me how that make sense. Rymer more interested in party politics and being loyal to party than to the country. That is what it looks like to me.

Like constantly patching decrepit roads doesn’t change there design just a short term fix for a worried failing image conscious government. Trying to make a silk purse out of a Sows ear.

  6. Eldread says:

Myron us completely right, notice all other ministry is underfunded, health and utilities infrastructure and education, the one place that is not underfunded is the ministry of party and fete and airlines flying tour excursions around the world, touring excursions is so efficient that natalio dropped over in new York from his Dubai trip to go model in a prisoner jumper suit, he must be showing solidarity with Andrew fahie I’m some smart way.
So nothing for premiere natalio Wheatley is hampered by budget, he emasculate them so he don’t get any challenges for his position, keep everybody begging to get monies for their ministry, but i think natalio is scared of sharie though.
But oh mehson! Kye just want to be in natalio good book that if in an election they could ditch Lorna and Fraser he can get back his position as deputy premiere.
