We are good at pretending things are well — Fraser
Despite complaints by some residents about the territory’s serious problems, Third District Representative Julian Fraser has said the BVI excels at giving the impression that everything is fine.
Residents have complained unsuccessfully about the BVI’s poor infrastructure and social ills for years, with little besides stop-gap measures provided by successive governments.
“For some reason, we here in the Virgin Islands are good at concealing the truth. We are good at ignoring things,” Fraser said. “We are good at pretending that everything is well. But all is not well. All can’t be well. We’re in a sad state. We’re in a bad position. And the only people that can fix it is the government.”
Fraser said it was Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley who put himself in a position to take the leadership job with claims that he could take care of things.
“From where I sit, things are not being taken care of. You might look at me and tell me, ‘But [I’m] doing [my] best’. But then you have to ask yourself the question, is my best good enough?” Fraser stated.
Fraser said even though some may argue that the Opposition has been silent in the face of public concerns, that silence should be considered “golden” at times.
“Sometimes silence is golden. I haven’t been saying much. I know I haven’t been saying much, and for good reason. I just don’t think you talk for talk’s sake. But there comes a time when you have to say something. And frankly, I’m standing here and I’m being nice,” Fraser stated.
He said although there comes a time when you need to roll up your sleeves and start throwing punches, he did not feel the time has come for him to do that as yet.
