We are tired of government’s drivel — Flax-Brutus

Flax-Brutus

Residents of Virgin Gorda have expressed deep frustration with the government’s handling of healthcare services on the island, demanding greater accountability and improved emergency response.

The issue arose at a recent community meeting where several residents raised concerns about delays in accessing urgent medical care, which they claim have put lives at risk.

During the meeting, former Tourism Director Sharon Flax-Brutus criticised the government for neglecting the healthcare needs of residents of Virgin Gorda. “Years and years, we’ve been listening to your drivel, and it’s got to stop. You found over four million dollars to party and jam… but you couldn’t sort out half a million dollars to deal with Virgin Gorda and the outer-island clinics?” Flax-Brutus said while highlighting the disparity between spending on festivities and essential services.

Health Minister Vincent Wheatley acknowledged the frustration but expressed concern that the petition circulating within the community had garnered only 500 signatures. “I really thought there would be more… this is an urgent matter. I’m not prepared to kick this can any further,” Wheatley said.

Flax-Brutus, however, pointed out that the number of signatures on the petition was likely reduced because some people, especially work permit holders, were afraid to sign for fear of repercussions.

“The work permit holders have asked me, they said ‘Sharon, we are afraid to sign our name to the petition’,” she stated. “My question to them is that, ‘In the middle of the night, when you have to go to the clinic or wherever, are you a work permit holder, or are you a humanitarian?”

“I encourage everybody to sign that goddamn petition and get it to the governor because all y’all are doing a set of excuses,” she urged.

The concerns come in the wake of a tragic incident involving the death of a resident, Revovion Sprauve, known as “Bucky,” who passed away on August 31 after reportedly being denied timely access to medical services at Virgin Gorda’s Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic due to reduced hours.

The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the event, noting that emergency contact information had been widely publicised.

Residents urged the government to prioritise their healthcare needs, ensuring that tragedies like Sprauve’s are not repeated.

Too much opportunistic people in the country. According to sister Joyce, take yuh licks and shut up. She put in Vincent with she l**s. Now Vincent is the rep and minister of health and nothing in VG has improved.

These same people complaining elected a representative for over 30 years, who was also the Premier/Chief Minister for many of those years and they never got even a tool shed as a health facility. The same NDP they wanted to kill are the ones that built the hospital and they still voted them out. I don’t feel sorry for any of them, their minds and hearts are too nasty! What is this woman really talking about now?

  12. Styles. says:

The issue with the VG clinics isn’t new. We all know the people on emergency duty cannot be bothered to get up to get to work.

The issue with healthcare isn’t new in general. We have had several cases where doctors simply send away patients who then died (including the lady with covid).

The issue with the government not caring at all isn’t new either. They like to party, build walls, lose aircrafts, hire barges for border security, build pier parks, give away grants money to their friends and family, etc.

Let’s not act surprised. The BVI is in terrible condition and if 300 people voting can dictate who the premier will be, it will never change.

Made me laugh woah. Someone said it, im stunned.

They are too less. COI is over, no take over. Now what? oh lets plan. They were supposed to come out with a celebration excited with all the good coming our way. All they want to do is build another monument or two.

They want sweet talk. Sometimes the truth is ugly. Drivel. Ask a serious question. Every now n then the anti bvi news works in our favor.

If they are afraid to sign a health petition they would be afraid to sign any progressive petition.

A cannabis petition would never work.

  16. vg resident says:

I may have a solution to your concerns about heath care on Virgin Gorda. I have a good friend who has been to VG many times and expressed some interest in coming down to help in health care. She is a US licensed Surgeon. I just spoke to her and one concern she has is how the BVI would accept a US licensed medical person. She is willing to come to VG and set up a practice and would run the VG clinic. She would also be interested in training local folks in medical procedures. She is highly qualified and trains other doctors in cosmetic surgery. She would also want to set a cosmetic surgery practice on VG and bring in overseas patients to undergo treatments. In return for providing medical services to the clinic, she would also like to use the clinic for cosmetic procedures. I think this would be a win-win situation. To correct myself I meant a medical cannabis petition, they will be scared. The politicians need to be brave for the people they claim to represent.
