We have interests to protect, Premier tells OECS Council

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley told the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Council of Health Ministers Meeting this week that it is essential for the BVI to actively participate in addressing its unique challenges and protect its interests in relevant discussions.

Premier Wheatley expressed that during the COVID-19 pandemic, global collaboration and knowledge-sharing highlighted common challenges faced by countries worldwide.

However, he said the territory’s ability to adapt and develop tailored solutions was influenced by factors like geography, population size, and available resources.

“I emphasise this point to underscore that we who are closest to our own situation, who witness and experience the challenges every day in our own countries, are the best positioned to deal with some of the challenges we face,” the Premier said.

He added: “In the least, we must be involved in the process – and we must ensure that we are in those conversations when they happen. We have interests that need to be protected and we have a contribution to make.”

Premier Wheatley said the OECS, generally, and the Pooled Procurement Service (PPS), more specifically, demonstrate the benefits of community, cooperation and unity and prove that its strengths and abilities as a collective are magnified many times more than the sum of its individual parts.

“It is my considered view that the success of the PPS initiative is a blueprint for tackling many of the other challenges that the people of our region face, and which are somewhat unique to our circumstances as an archipelago of countries, where we are separated by water,” the Premier stated.

He added that people in the region continue to face high prices not only for pharmaceuticals but also for food, building materials, technology tools and other essentials.

When one speaks in generalized terms with no specifics, they are speaking from their behind. This is like not doing any homework but showing up to class, unprepared, and talking gibrish to cover up the fact. The country is doomed! The country is lost! It all gone to the dogs. There is no hope.

Not exactly. Sometimes the challenges we face prevent us form being able to deal with them, which is why we need outside help. When the cross became too heavy to bare, Jesus did not deny Simon of Cyrene the opportunity to help.
