We must learn to recylce and separate waste

Amid increased local conversations about the climate crisis and last weekend’s fire at the Pockwood Pond dump site, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has stated that the territory would benefit if residents started separating their waste.

The leader said many of the problems at the Pockwood Pond dump could be reduced if the community took time to separate their waste before disposal

“I would encourage every single resident to start recycling and start separating waste. We know the difficulties we have with the incinerator but one thing every citizen can do to help that situation is to separate their waste. A significant amount of the waste stream going down to Pockwood Pond are things we can recycle like plastic waste,” Premier Wheatley explained at a press conference last Friday.

The separation of waste is practised in countries such as Canada and the United States. But in those countries, governments usually provide dedicated garbage bins and other resources that help residents to separate garbage, recyclables and organic waste. In those countries, there are also dedicated waste management teams that deal with the collection of different types of waste.

The BVI already faces many challenges with its garbage collection. And while encouraging residents to separate waste, Premier Wheatley did not mention how the government would provide resources to make this a reality.

In the meantime, just one day after the Premier made the suggestion for residents to start separating waste, residents were awakened by an early morning blaze at the Pockwood Pond Dumpsite on Saturday, December 9.

The Waste Management Department said the fire was likely caused by older garbage heat which came into contact with combustibles. The department said the combustion of the materials could be heard on the site and spread to the entire garbage load, which fueled the quick acceleration of the fire.

The Department also said its new protocols led to swift action which extinguished the blaze at the dump site.

Mr. Premier, you are on point. Waste management starts at the point where waste is created. You must sell that to the community to get them on board. On the government side, having different bins for different categories of waste is a good start.

    What about wasteful spending ?

  3. Rubber Duck says:

In parts of the UK this non sense has lad to people needing 13 different bins to sort their waste into. In other parts rats run riot where the typical 6 or 7 waste bins on wheels the average house is forced to have, sit outside in the street because there is no where else to put them.

BVI looks enough like a garbage dump already.

    We dont need this.

This is the problem with the BVI. Encouragement and discussions. We need a funded recycling program not more chat.

Can we maybe seperate all the broken vehicles from the bush and the otherwise beautiful VI. Right now the whole VI is a dump site. Especially the water front areas. People soon going to notice and then they all going elsewhere. We then back riding donkeys. I do like donkeys. Bring it on.
Or not. We have a choice.

Mr. Politicians, it has been many years of no progress in this country, no changes and if any it’s minute. Do not allow box items to enter your port bringing the weebles, roaches, aphids, silverfish and more.

Ban all cereals, they are no, no, good. All the process food ban it. Have you seen the nation of people you are building lately, most need to loose the excessive bulges in their belly. And keep it clean. Ver 300 people with cancer as reported by the news, not good!

Help them plant their own food of fruits and vegetables, occupying all this waste land with coconut trees. And those who don’t have land can lease to own, or lease for a period of time. There is a time of plenty and a time of want that is coming and we are not prepared.
